So as not to hijack THIS thread, I decided to start this one. For those of you who have moved long distance, please share your stories about the logistics of moving. I'm planning to move to the UK, and I'd love advice on what to expect as far as getting stuff across the pond :D

MINIMIZE YOUR STUFF. I've often lived in Greyhound buses, moved, traveled, and generally been dislocated, and I can tell you exactly what material possessions I need: 3 changes of clothes (one formal, one jeansntshirt, one shiny-leather-hot), deoderant, toothbrusy, razor, notebook, pens, more socks, tampons, wallet, and phone/address book. Try this. Walk out of your house and try to name everything you own. Now go back in. If you didn't name it, you probably don't really need it.

If it was that important why did you buy it it's own Apartment just to keep it away from you? (Said the man who Manages a Storage Facilty and knows most people want what they have in storage but never really use it. At the end of the day it's just Stuff I agree with MissM.)

Storage units are great...you still have your stuff, but you don't need to lug it around and keep track of it (or have it stolen). Hell, I still have things at my parents' house and I've hardly been there since I was 16 or so. It's true, though, you might want it, but you don't need it. Edited because Steel is so quick on the post I didn't see it =)

Steel... it's stuff I used to have at my Apt in CA. When I moved away I didnt have the space to transport it. I had 2 units ( I use door-to-door), but last time I was in CA I went and consolidated it into 1 unit. Some of the stuff there is an antique desk chair my Dad gave me (one of the most comfy chairs I've ever sat in), my collection of cassettes and VHS tapes (quite a number of which are irreplacable), most of my most beloved books, mementos of my years working on the road with bands, and other stuff that means oodles to me :)

I sold loads of stuff on ebay chucked out a whole mass of stuff and the rest came with me. It's still sat about needing attention. The only thing i really really wont part with are my pics of my kids. To meanything else is just a posession that could be replaced if need be.

I have moved many times in my life, and here's what I know. I need a notebook - one to write my thoughts in and a couple of pens. I need something pretty to wear. I need music. I need a good book - anthologies are good so you don't get bored. I need pix of my family. I need one Christmas thing - a stocking or ornament that is important to me. And one comfort thing - mine is a hat my aunt gave me. They have all the other stuff I need wherever it is I'm going. So I need money. That's it. That part is actually important. For 2 reasons. First, where you are going has its own quirks and the people have learned how to handle them. Trust that what you need will be there. For example, how was I to know that in Peru my shoes would be unusable because of the way the roads were made, or in Korea how was I to know that it rarely gets cold where I am so a heavy winter coat wasn't necessary. Second you will find that you wish you hadn't brought some stuff and that you have... NO MATTER WHAT YOU BRING. So make it easy on yourself. And at the airport it is difficult lugging all that stuff around. Leave your stuff well marked and available for others to mail anything you really need. People love to get international gifts, so if you promise them something in return, folks will help. Print up labels of all the people you love and want to send letters to.... You will be amazed at how easy your life will be if you do this. Don't over think it. Try to make it only 2 suitcases so you don't have to pay at the airport. *International flights allow heavier weight than domestic. Since you are going international - don't forget your passport. What about the cats GT? Are they staying at home? If youre bringing them, they'll end up in quarantine for months, even if they had all their shots etc E

Ok have to say this to the pack rat OP. If you havent used it in the last 6 months get rid of it. Take your tapes and take the songs you want off of them and put them on a CD. You can do the same with the VHS tapes.

The first time i moved, i took whatever i could stuff in the back of a longbed pickup and still close the tonneau cover... the last time i moved, it took four trips with a 25' moving truck [&:] If you're planning to move a household worth of stuff, your best bet will probably be to contact some freight forwarders out of Miami, truck it all down there and hire a shipping container... It'll take a few weeks for your stuff to get to you, but it's the only cost-effective way to move any amount of furniture or other large stuff.

Sunshine hugs thanks! dark.. I'll just come borrow yours ;) lol actually, I have 2, so that's easy LOL Lady E.. I did some checking about that.. as long as the girls have had all their shots within 30 days of coming over, and have a signed statement/certificate from a vet, no quarantine necessary :) Dnomyar, the tapes are in storage in CA.. I'm in FL.. Dave.. yeah, my last couple of moves I managed to do in 3-4 trips in my Blazer. (woulda been easier to do it in one 24ft truck..lol). The furniture I have here I can easily let go, it's more my artwork and other more personal stuff. DomMe.. thanks!

urgh - my artwork I would NOT part with! I didn't move countries, but I did an eight hour move(six with good traffic ha). I did throw out a lot of stuff, both ends! Money is going to be a bit of an issue I would guess - have you looked into conversion rates yet? Cities are always more expensive but the further north you go, the lower the cost of living but that is reflected in wages. Don't forget the voltage is different for goods over here, so you might want to rethink hairdryers and other essential-non essental electronic goods can stay. Are you asking about the logistics of bringing stuff across? Or buying stuff across the pond? Meh, my brolly is broken. Get a hat is good advise! And forget shoes for the cats, get wellies.[;)] the.dark.

Just remember that everything that plugs into an electric outlet is going to need converters. So, if you can let it go and can afford new over there, I'd do that. I've made long-distance moves, but only within the US. Each time I've done it (except when my employer moved me), I've done it with one truck.I understand about the "stuff" that you can't let go of. It seems to grow, though. A friend once said that things that have sentimental value become things with sedimental value - they kind of collect themselves. Have a happy, stress-free move, and great news about the cats!

Yeah, I discovered the electrical thing whenI went to Holland.. lol had to jury-rig a phone charger from the one I had taken with me and an old one of his. I would take my computer, but that should just be a matter of getting a new power cord (and flipping the little switch on the PSU). I'm looking at the logistics of moving stuff over. (the artwork, cats, etc.) Nothing huge (furniture unneeded). I'm thinking much of what I would want there could probably be sent in small lots via DHL/UPS/etc... Not the cats, obviously LOL

Poetry... yeah, as I look around here, from where I sit, aside from artwork, photos and such, there isnt much I see that I couldn't part with - some of it more easily than others, but...LOL

I have moved essentialy cross country 2 times. Cincinnati to vegas, and then vegas to nashville The Cinci to Vegas trip I took everything I owned becasue I refused to leave anything where my exhusband could potentially get into it. I have a storage unit in Vegas where all my stuff sits and waits for me to get a house and move it in. When I moved to Nashville, I packed my car and drove here. One car full of stuff and that was it. I had no furniture with me aside from a folding table and a folding chair. I had the clothes I would need immediately, some decorative stuff and the toiletries I already had collected. There was some food stuffs my mom packed up to get me started, and a few necessary kitchen appliances, a set of dishes and silverware and towels, bedding and the like. My Fish Fido and that was it. Everything else still lives in Vegas for now, and what I needed when I got here I bought here for the most part. I have gone back to Vegas and gotten more clothes out of storage and a few other bits and pieces, but overal this was a more successful move than anyone expected with me starting from scratch. DV
