Following on from MC's comment on the Tata/Ford thread that the decline of UK manufacturing is down to poor management (which I agree with), I wondered what makes for a bad manager and poor management?

This is a multiple selection poll, so tick all that you think apply, and please let us have your "other" as a post? Also interested in examples of poor management!

LOL Lady E..shoulda added a box for all of the above LOL

Fortunately, my boss doesnt fall into those categories (except never being in the office, which actually works in his favor).

I chose won't mix and is too friendly.  Being someone who has been in management for years.  There is a fine line I've always drawn with my employees.  Never wanting to be their friend.  Friends take advantage of one another and when in business you cannot have that.
You also cannot appear to be superior to your employees.  You have to get down and dirty with them even if that is shuffling papers.  It earns respect in their eyes.

Beyond ripping off the company and never coming to work all the other choices are the same.

My managers, the bad ones, are very thoroughly guilty of the "is always right" to the point where they have damaged my machinery becasue they know better than I do how to fix things. I watch them try, and then let them make the phone cals to the district supervisors when something breaks and they have to then put the lab down for service for 2-3 hours while I fix what would have taken me 5 minutes before they got into it. And they are always required , now, to let district know they tried to fix it without me and why they did so. Our district person has caught on and certain managers are on "probation" and facing repercussions if they touch my machines without me again.

Bad management, in general, are the ones who forget they are trying to MANAGE and start trying to DICTATE.
They for the most part know better than trying it with me becaue I am difficult and answer back and do as I please anyway, but not al of them have that sort of pull.
