BlackPhx -> Museums of some interest perhaps? (3/27/2008 1:47:04 PM)

I will admit it, I have a morbid sense of humor and curiousity, much more so than Master has I suspect, Here are a few museums that have caught my attention and I wanna go to:

Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments: Prague, Czech Republic
Ah, the Middle Ages, when a slip of the tongue could spiral hilariously into the accused being slowly disemboweled in the public square. Prague's Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments is dedicated to depicting the means by which confessions were extracted from alleged heretics.

The visitor can cast his gaze over more than 60 morbid torture devices in a tour that takes about 45 minutes. There's even a useful tutorial on how to operate each machine (English language descriptions included). Our favorite? The Head Crusher: The chin of the accused is placed on a wooden support, a helmet is attached snugly to his head, a crank is turned and ... well, we'll let you imagine the rest. Admission: about $12.

Three sex museums: Amsterdam, Netherlands; Paris, France; Husavik, Iceland
No European city is really complete without a museum dedicated to amorous predilection. We've selected three of particular note — a menage a trois, if you will — dedicated to the ars erotica.

The Louvre? Been there, done that. On your next trip to Paris, why not visit the Musee de l'Erotisme? Housed in a seven-story building in Quartier Pigalle — an area known for its sex shops, Moulin Rouge and back-alley tarts — the museum displays an impressive collection of erotic bric-a-brac from around the world. Offerings include South American and Asian fertility objects, displays on the history of Parisian prostitution, and rotating exhibits of modern erotic art. Admission: about $12, or $8 with advance online reservations.

Amsterdam's sex museum, or Venustempel, the world's oldest of its kind, is visited by roughly half a million titillated tourists a year, who peruse its large stash of erotica. Pieces include paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, recordings, contraptions and even private interactive viewing booths. Admission: about $5.

The Icelandic Phallological Museum, located in the small fishing village of Husavik, is a bit more specific in its focus. Housing roughly 250 phallic specimens, the museum is said to contain examples from every mammal in Iceland, many of them mounted on the walls, others in glass jars. Admission: about $7.50.

Ok this one is a bit much for many but it has my interest peaked.

The Mutter Museum: Philadelphia, Pa.
Staring open-mouthed at a stranger's physical oddities is usually considered rather rude, but at the Mutter Museum, unabashed staring is encouraged — nay, demanded. How could you avert your gaze from an obese corpse that somehow turned into soap?

The Philadelphia museum exhibits some 20,000 objects showcasing human health anomalies of spine-tingling variety. With unblinking eyes, you can peruse the display of 2,000 objects removed from people's throats or put your face up against the glass to see President Grover Cleveland's cancerous jaw growth. And don't miss the skeleton of a woman long accustomed to wearing a corset; the suffocating apparatus slowly altered the bone structure of her ribcage, all in the name of culturally defined beauty. (You'll never complain about underwire again!) But these odd offerings are no mere gimcrack. Collectively they seem to communicate a message of medical
progress. Admission: $12, with discounts for students and seniors. Children under 6 are free.

As does this one:

Glore Psychiatric Museum: St. Joseph, Mo.
About an hour's drive from Kansas City, the Glore Psychiatric Museum documents the history of "State Lunatic Asylum No. 2" (only just closed in the mid 1990's). The holdings are contained in a separate, modern building, as the original asylum is now serving as a prison.

Some of the devices used to treat the insane are reminiscent of a torture museum — like a tranquilizer chair and blood-letting blades. And in a clear attempt to one-up the Mutter Museum, Glore showcases 1,446 objects of digestive intrigue — paper clips, nails, safety pins, buttons — removed from one patient's stomach and intestines in 1929 (she died on the operating table). The second floor of the building displays art created by the inmates. Admission: $3.50, with discounts for children. The price includes admission to two other local museums.

Amsterdam has a Museum of Torture as well.

The museum, its curator and it's educational display "Before and After: Toast" were the cover story for the Jan/Feb 1992 "Journal of Irreproducible Results." The Museum has been toured by the hosts of NPR's Weekend Edition, Morning Edition, and featured on NPR's "The Splendid Table." In 2002, a televised tour of the museum was featured on the Food Network's "Unwrapped." The Online BFM will be featured in the book "Weird Massachusetts," to be released in 2008.

there used to be a place in London called "The London Dungeon" and it was not a bdsm themed place, it was basically a torture museum.  looks like they are still in business from their website.  those brits really know how to dial it up a notch [:D]

petdave -> RE: Museums of some interest perhaps? (3/27/2008 8:05:12 PM)

The Tower of London had a display of torture devices when we were there, but it wasn't very impressive [&:]

What was interesting was a display at Chillingham Castle in northern England... some unusual items, supposedly all authentic, and as a bonus they were kept in the original castle dungeon. Creepy place, too.

Criminal museum in Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, Germany. Some interesting torture devices. http://www.kriminalmuseum.rothenburg.de/

Had Wild Boar for the first time in a restaurant built around 1450. Wild cherry cream sauce. Fantastisch.

Sounds interesting!

Emperor1956 -> RE: Museums of some interest perhaps? (3/27/2008 10:40:15 PM)

I love funky museums.  And....the weird thing is there are SOOO many of them.   Museums I have been to, and STRONGLY recommend:

The Museum of Sex in NYC is pretty cool...wonderful "Pillow book" exhibition last time I was there.  Word of caution:  If you go with your all too worldly 17 year old daughter, be prepared to forget a lot of what you hear....

The Mutter Museum in Philadelphia is amazing.

Minnesota has a weird collection of museums.  Truly amazing is The Museum of Questionable Medical Devices.  This used to have its own building, but alas, the money for preserving horrific looking anti-erection sheaths that stick needles into your woody while you sleep (and about 2000 other weirdo things) ran out, and it now is a gallery in the Minnesota Science Museum.

Less amazing, but worth seeing is The SPAM Museum.  No, not computers...SPAM...the real deal.  An homage to ground and pressed pork product.  "Our 16,500 square-foot museum honors SPAM family of products, one of America's oldest and best-loved icons.  The SPAM Museum pays homage to the almost 70 year history, quirky joys and unprecedented excitement SPAM has inspired for generations of people worldwide.   The self-guided tour is enhanced with our friendly and knowledgeable SPAMBASSADORS."

And finally in Minnesota, the BFBOT Museum (that's BIG FUCKIN' BALL OF TWINE):  uh...yah.  that's it.  its in Darwin, MN, and its the biggest ball of twine ever made by one guy.  Its under glass (No rubbing up against the twine, sisters!).   Its...well...here.  There.  Also not to be missed...the big pliers the guy created to manipulate the BFBOT.

Two great Museums off the beaten path in my hometown:   The International Museum of Surgical Science which is on North Michigan Avenue and OF COURSE:

The Leather Archives & Museum
Serving the Fetish World
6418 N. Greenview Avenue
Chicago, IL 60626

The museum or the food? [:D]

The town itself it beautiful. Very romantic.

Emperor1956 -> RE: Museums of some interest perhaps? (3/27/2008 11:15:02 PM)

The Emperor's favorite weirdo museums which he has actually spent money and time to visit (SHAME!), Part Deux:

--How could I forget the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Hayward Wisconsin.  No...really...wait...before you give it the big yawn (and lets face it the only thing more boring than fishing is a MUSEUM about fishing) this is a museum inside a GIANT FISH.  4 1/2 stories.  About 400 yards long.   a giant leaping Muskie.  No I was NOT HIGH.  I have been there dammit!  And....there are FOUR MORE BUILDINGS of FISHING to see...From the brochure:

The adjacent four-building museum complex houses fishing artifacts housing an inventory of over 5,000 dated lures, hundreds of antique rods, reels and angling accessories, over 300 antique rods, reels and angling accessories, over 300 antique and classic outboard motors, and more than 400 mounts of near 200 different species of fish.

--The Mustard Museum of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin.  NO I am NOT making this up.  Sheesh.   Once claimed to be the world's largest mustard museum til some upstart Frenchmen opened one in....well...Dijon.  Sponsors of America's National Mustard Day and the "Mustard Writing Contest" which I figure must award prizes for yellow journalism.

no..don't go...no.....there's more.

I am a train and car freak...and I've been to some amazing train and car museums, but those are all pretty normal (if you beg...I'll tell you some of the best hidden ones).

BUT there are two memorable ones:  The Brooks Stevens Auto Museum in Mequon Wisconsin, which recently closed.  If you don't know who Stevens was, and you are into design, art and 20th century culture, GOOGLE him.  He is the man who designed the modern Weinermobile, and for that alone he has a place in heaven.  I don't know where the amazing off-beat car collection went, tho.

And finally...FLOYD GARRETT'S MUSCLE CAR MUSEUM IN SEVIERVILLE, TN  Need I say more?   This museum is guaranteed to cause more erections than EITHER the Sex Museum or the Leather Archives.   I know where I want to be buried, now...

E.

Some day i WILL see that! And i'll be singing Weird Al's tribute [:)]

BTW, if your interest extends to bikes, or just covers old machines in general, the "Wheels Through Time" museum in Maggie Valley, NC is a MUST see... 120-odd bikes dating back to the early 1900s, and they all run!

I am a bit disappointed I misread Museums as Muslims because I love them 'oh no terrorists are all around us' type threads that pop up from time to time.[:D]

Check out the Museum of Menstruation and Women's Health:
http://www.mum.org/
I think they did in fact used to have a physical location, but it looks like it's closed, until such time as they can relocate.
Interesting website if nothing else........[:@]

You know...if someone donated a small space to them, they could erect a new museum and refer to the location as the "Stay Free mini-pad".

Thank you, thank you....I'll be here all week.  Tip your waitress!
