Level -> Obama: would have left if the Rev hadn't resigned? (3/28/2008 3:39:16 AM)

quote:

White House hopeful Barack Obama suggests he would have left his Chicago church had his longtime pastor, whose fiery anti-American comments about U.S. foreign policy and race relations threatened Obama's campaign, not stepped down.

"Had the reverend not retired, and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I wouldn't have felt comfortable staying at the church," Obama said Thursday during a taping of the ABC talk show, "The View." The interview will be broadcast Friday.

Level, why is there such an obsession with senator Obama? I'm genuinely curious. I see no proof his moral standards are lower than the other two (as a matter of fact, they seem higher, but that's personal), I see no proof that he's fucked more more often than they have (as a matter of fact, he's younger than them, so it's likely he's made fewer bad decisions than they have)... and yet, he's the main news fodder of this election campaign.

Any idea why?

Yep, he had been contemplating leaving the last 20 years.  Just slow to react.

DomKen -> RE: Obama: would have left if the Rev hadn't resigned? (3/28/2008 6:40:22 AM)

Because he just might actually be intent on moving forward on some of the most devisive issues in America. We haven't seen that since Johnson left office in 1969 and many people claimed/hoped we wouldn't see it again.

Wow, kitten. That's a good question. Why does anyone ever ask hard questions about people out of the left field...

It does seem unfair. Doesn't it!

The puppets are trying to Swiftboat him.

you know the more anyone focuses on Rev Wright and/or Trinity United Church, the more church attendance continues to grow.  the media is not really hurting the image ...strangely enough we're benefitting from it.

thank you.

Sanity -> RE: Obama: would have left if the Rev hadn't resigned? (3/28/2008 6:52:28 AM)

Have the racist sermons been toned down at all, since the Pastor Wright departed? How often is the word "whitey" used these days.

My personal opinion but winding up the KKK doesn't seem to be a benefit in my eyes.  Among other hate groups out there.

Dude, you have to do what black people have been told to over the years... rise above it, ya know? Don't let racism get to you - it shouldn't be difficult [;)] .

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Obama: would have left if the Rev hadn't resigned? (3/28/2008 7:00:03 AM)

wow - racist sermons and "whitey" talk - you need to hear/view the entire context of Rev Wright's questionable sermon that the media didn't air on tv.

other than that - not answering your questions because you should come to Southside of Chicago and hear the sermons for yourself.

Sanity -> RE: Obama: would have left if the Rev hadn't resigned? (3/28/2008 7:07:36 AM)

Links to some very lengthy sermons were posted here, and I sat through them, and I agreed with another poster who wrote that "in context they weren't any better."

And last time I had a steak dinner on the South side of Chicago I wasn't really all that impressed with it, but I do appreciate the invite. Thank you.

(The steak dinner was great, it was Chicago's south side that I didn't care for).

Ahem... here's an extract from a letter Wright sent to the NYT a little over a year ago... you will find this enlightening; he had written to a NYT journalist who had completely sensationalised an interview he had given her. The highlights are mine.

quote:

Out of a two-hour conversation with you about Barack's spiritual journey and my protesting to you that I had not shaped him nor formed him, that I had not mentored him or made him the man he was, even though I would love to take that credit, you did not print any of that. When I told you, using one of your own Jewish stories from the Hebrew Bible as to how God asked Moses, "What is that in your hand?," that Barack was like that when I met him. Barack had it "in his hand." Barack had in his grasp a uniqueness in terms of his spiritual development that one is hard put to find in the 21st century, and you did not print that.

[...]

The president of our denomination, the Reverend John Thomas, has offered to try to help you clarify in your confused head what Trinity Church is even though you spent the entire weekend with us setting me up to interview me for what turned out to be a smear of the Senator; and yet The New York Times continues to roll on making the truth what it wants to be the truth. I do not remember reading in your article that Barack had apologized for listening to that bad information and bad advice. Did I miss it? Or did your editor cut it out? [...]

A year ago, this shit was already going on. A year later, the froth at people's mouths is even more abundant. A bib distribution may be in order [8D] .

If it's racism on the part of someone on the Left, ignore it... rise above it. It's okay.

That about sum up your thinking on this?

A year ago, an apparently racist candidate wasn't leading the delegate race for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States...

Hold on a moment.

You're actually claiming association with someone who might be a bigot makes the associate a bigot? Are you really sure that is the standard you want applied to all people?

Yep - it's obvious Obama isn't racist (his mother's white, for crying out loud :-), but if it makes you happy to believe he is because it comforts you in your mistaken belief that white people are victims of widespread racism, feel free to enjoy the ride.

It doesn't make you right though, and we shan't be fooled [;)] .

He positions himself as the agent of change.  He claims to be coming from a different place philosophically and politically.  When something crops up that runs contrary to that position, it's news.

And there's a lot that runs contrary to that position.

Maybe you're the victim of collective hallucination, because I don't see what you're seeing. It's quite obvious that I'm not prepared to participate in this absurd delusion. You're the victims of media manipulation, but you probably know this, deep down ;-p.

See you in November.
