It sounds stupid I know but I have no clue, and I don't have a manual or nothing just the phone.

On every cell phone I've ever had, it was press and hold the 1 key (look for a symbol on the key that looks like an old-fashioned reel to reel tape). I checked, and it looks like it's the same for yours. Here is a "how to" guide for voicemail for your phone, including a list of shortcuts/commands. you have to add your voice mail #, then you can call it....then you enter your temporary password...if you dont know it..call phone company.

On the number one there was an envelope icon and a @ sign, am I looking at the right icons?

With MetroPCS, you just call your own cell number from your cell, and then enter your (usually) four digit passcode. If you call from a landline, press the star key while your voicemail recording is playing, and you'll be able to then enter your passcode. The envelope icon usually means text message, while the VM icon looks like a reel-to-reel tape.
