Here is one of my favorite one hit wonder songs by Thomas Dolby..."She blinded me with Science.

Background singers with 1980's peacock's ass hair do's[:D]

I'm sorry to inform you but my resident DJ wizard says only 4 of those are actually considered 1 hit wonders... Mardones, Steam, Ferguson, and blue - the rest had minor successes that did make it to the top 100 after their initial "Big Hit".... feel free to pick his brain if you want to know anything about music-- the man is a prodigy.

Flock of Seagulls has to be on there some where Level.

I loved that song.

Hmm. I did too, but at first glance, I put them into the 2 solid size hit category..... now, using my somewhat arbitrary criteria, we can work them into the extra round, tomorrow.

As I've stated, almost all of the choices on here are either explicitly 1 hit wonders, or only had one major hit. Good enough for my purposes [X(]

Level,  I blame you for me going through my 80s era music files all afternoon.

I don't think I've queued up Lime Spiders or The Uncanny X-men in years.  I'm still missing some stuff from "Painters & Dockers" and some other good australian bands.

Iron Butterflly 12
Norman Greenbaum 8, which kinda surprises me.

Hey Level,
Thanks for these polls and the clips.  I love 'em[:)].  D'arby is great but I had to go with "Thunder Island."  One of my all-time favorite '70's hits.............luci

badprofessor -> RE: 1 Hit Wonders - Round 1 0f 8 (3/30/2008 10:09:21 AM)

This was easily the most overloaded of the polls. There are at least 5 clear contenders.

I passed on Iron Butterfly 'cuz the hit was a heavily editted version of the LP version, but clearly it's a monster.

The Steam song is a great blue-eyed soul track, but it loses points for the hook becoming a staple of sporting stadiums around North America.

The Norman Greenbaum has a nice fuzzy psych-Christian thing going on. It was one of the first 45's I ever owned. I was seven.

In the end, I voted for Shocking Blue because of the great riff and that crazy bubblegum-psych vibe.

I couldn't even listen to most of the others, but if Elvis Costello ever hears that Escape Club track, there will probably be a lawsuit...

Prof, I chose that Iron Butterfly vid because the others were split into two, I think youTube has a time limit on vids [:D] thanks for the vote.

Thanks for the polls (although it's getting close to 1:30 and I've pretty much killed my up at 'em Sunday morning going through them all)! For sure, it's been loads of fun...

Cuffkinks -> RE: 1 Hit Wonders - Round 1 0f 8 (3/30/2008 10:28:28 AM)

     I'm gonna go with Benny Mardones. Because first off, as a singer, I loved the vocal one that one song. Second, as some have mentioned here, not everyone on the list was a real "one hit wonder." Benny Mardones was. Although, he was pretty well known in his home area upstate New York. As for success, he had it with that one song. That was it. But mainly, I loved the vocal.
   Just My opinion.

Level -> RE: 1 Hit Wonders - Round 1 0f 8 (4/2/2008 4:04:33 AM)

Poll ends tonight - Iron Butterfly leads.
