My son had all four removed at once and suffered no ill effects.  I will add that I am so obsessive that we followed the post-op instructions exactly.

"that pulling wisdom teeth is a racket. ".

For people with normal teeth I agree completely. I have mine, all of them at 47. I think most of dentistry is a racket, not that they do it on purpose, but it what they are taught.

I'd like to go into a long treatise about this, but I will refrein from doing so because for most people it is too late. But I will say this much, everything they tell you about preventing tooth decay is bullshit.

So, in the interest of helping those who still have a mouthful of teeth I say this.

They tellyou that you can eat all the sugar you want as long as you brush frequently, this is bullshit. They say acids produced in your mouth eat the enamel away, poppycock. Teeth are supposed to grow, and get worn off like nails. Sugar does not eat your teeth from the outside, it causes either a deficiency or redistribution of the resouces in the body so that the teeth are deprived of the nutrients they need to grow.

Cavities come from the inside out, and I want to see empirical evidence if someone wants to refute that. My evidence is this, do animals brush their teeth ?

What's more people with serious dental problems can expect osteopathic problems in the future, because teeth are bones. It is osteoporosis, it just hits the teeth alot of times first. How many people who have problems with their teeth also have TMJ problems ?

doll, sorry to hear that you have these problems, really. But what is done is done. If you need them out you need them out.

But I can say this, I let mine come in naturally and now I know why babies cry when they are teething. I could barely function for months. But I did.

Thing is if you can keep them, do so, but maybe you can't. And the roots go deep, very deep in some cases. Like one poster said they had to break his jaw.

Physiological studies and speculation suggest that the "set" of human teeth is required for proper development, which goes on for alot longer than many might think. The way the wisdom teeth grow in suggests that the adjacent molars are required to get them to come in right. If you have missing molars, the wisdom teeth might have to go as they may come in pointing forward or sticking out the side.

I also think that braces contribute to the problem, perpetuating the money tree so to speak. Crushing teeth together just to look good might cause problems in the future, and I think they know it.

The problem with issues like this is that once the damage is done, the damage is done. While I have actually had a tooth cap itself, or more aptly put, grow and wear off until the chipped part was gone, this is a healthy tooth. For a healthy tooth you need a healthy jaw. For a healthy jaw you need a healthy skeletal structure and blood flow, AND the proper nutrients in that blood.

And even all that might not work these days.

Enough for now. You do as you see fit. Just understand that I do not believe all their malarkey.

it's okay. I live in the middle of no where...100s of miles from a big city. This is the only clinic that takes Medicaid in the counties in my area. I've looked...asked around. This is the only place. People travel over an hour to go there.

I am sorry, but you are giving too many excuses.  If my health was in jeopardy and I complained as much as you do about every little thing going wrong, I wouldnt care if I had to drive 3 hours to the farthest place that will give me the proper help and care right away.  I would make preparations, TURN MY COMPUTER OFF and go get the issue solved.  No "well" or "but" or "cant I just" about it.  Its bothering you.  Make a few phone calls.  Get in the car, or a bus, or whatever and go.

I don't drive. And there is no way my dad will take me 3 hours away. He bitches about taking me the 30 minute drive. Makes me pay him a lot too.

I'm curious. Why do you come here and ask questions when you shoot down every single suggestion? What do you get out of this? So many people offer up real answers to you but for every answer you have a reason you won't do it. Not can't, but won't.

KyttynTheMynx -> RE: Should I have my wisdom teeth taken out? (3/30/2008 10:00:43 AM)

Your dad sucks.  Point blank.  I can honestly say that if my car was in the shop and I needed to get to an appointment, either parent would do so free of charge.  I dont know about where you are, but here they have medical taxi services.  Call around, and ask.  Or just get him to give you a ride to a bus station, and go from there.

Sheesh.  Then call your doctor if you are in such bad pain.  You do have a doctor, right?

my doctors won't do anything for pain...my gp just tells me to take tylenol. Which doesn't work for me.

I haven't shot down any reasonable suggestions. My doctors will not give out pain meds. I have tried dozens of times when I was in worse pain than I am not. And I have no way to travel 100s of miles away to go to a dentist.

I have had a very very bad experience with buses and I'm not willing to go on one ever again. I will die first.

My advice...Tomorrow morning get a phone book and start calling private practicing dentists and ask if they take Medicaid. I bet you will find quite a few.

If for some reason you want to stay with your current dentist i suggest you discuss pain control PRIOR to any procedure.

dollparts85 -> RE: Should I have my wisdom teeth taken out? (3/30/2008 10:15:44 AM)

I already called all of them in my area back when I was having bad tooth pain...no one else does. At least no one in the yellowbook website.

Plus, my dentist would not be removing my wisdom teeth. I would be seeing an oral surgeon.

mhawk -> RE: Should I have my wisdom teeth taken out? (3/30/2008 10:52:10 AM)

okay here's the deal on wisdom teeth and impactions. i didn't have mine removed because i could not afford to do so.so needless to say they came in and impacted the surrounding teeth. due to that i have experienced the same surrounding teeth breaking and getting infected despite cleaning and brushing on a regular basis.

there has been such horrible pain involved that i could not eat comfortably for years and had to take a shit load of pills to numb the pain.

it got os bad a couple of months ago i broke down in tears in front of everyone.had to call a dentist after hours on the weekend to get a pain prescription and anti bacterial, set up a consultation and then go in for oral surgery.

6 years later,i finally am pain free and got it taken care of once and for all.

if there is risk there by all means save your self the pain and get it taken care of now before it becomes something else.

dollparts85 -> RE: Should I have my wisdom teeth taken out? (3/30/2008 11:45:07 AM)

THE DOCTOR left it up to me as to what to do. I am trying to decide FOR MYSELF...what to do...by listening to other people's experiences.

Luciferica -> RE: Should I have my wisdom teeth taken out? (3/30/2008 11:50:07 AM)

I had mine out, they were very painful, and crooked, I haven't missed them!

CalifChick -> RE: Should I have my wisdom teeth taken out? (3/30/2008 12:01:42 PM)

There are reasons you are being told to stop. You may not understand the reasons. It doesn't mean you shouldn't take the advice of people that have been around here longer than you have. Think about that.
