dollparts85 -> ut oh! that did not sound good! (3/30/2008 12:37:27 PM)

I live in the 2nd floor of a 3 floor building...and the water pipes are pretty loud...I'm pretty used to it...but a minute ago they were really really loud and then all of a sudden there was this loud BANG...and it went quiet...LOL I'm guessing that is not a good thing...I'm gonna be pissed if my ceiling starts leaking or something LOL

christine1 -> RE: ut oh! that did not sound good! (3/30/2008 12:45:58 PM)

just stick a rag in it...the broken pipe that is.

the pipes are in the wall hehe

it may be nothing...I don't know...I'm not hearing anything. May have just been a weird pipe sound?

mhawk -> RE: ut oh! that did not sound good! (3/31/2008 6:52:11 AM)

couldn't tell you if it's good or bad.it really depends on if when it was built if they used good materials or shoddy materials.it could be as simple as over useage.

Sounds like a case of "water hammer"...... http://www.factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepair/PipeNoises.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_hammer

There ya go....all you need to know....unless of course, the REAL issue is that the "bang" was caused by a fracture in some main structural member of the building which in turn cut a pipe....in which case of course, the place is about to fall down.

Have a great day :)

domahpet -> RE: ut oh! that did not sound good! (3/31/2008 7:20:07 AM)

we used to have a water hammer here, the neighbot used to torture us with it.
when i complained to the landlord about the noise,
it took him a wecnh and about 5 minutes to fix.
but since your place is so old, DS is probably right.

kittinSol -> RE: ut oh! that did not sound good! (3/31/2008 7:35:26 AM)

I recommend sending the coughing pipes to an otolaryngologist.

pahunkboy -> RE: ut oh! that did not sound good! (3/31/2008 7:51:29 AM)

hun- you need to find the water shut off.   the one for your place and the main one.

if it is hot water- you wont notice until the current water cools or is used up.

find that shut off now!   as if there is a mess- it is not fun.

I agree...we could ask what we should do to feel better....then find excuses to not take the advice...

Call your landlord or the building superintendant and report what you heard.
