Yes, it does create confusion...My slave is not yet collared but I have referred to him as "slave" and he has loved it since early on. I did this purposefully so he would have a clear understanding of my expectations. He will remain under My consideration for a collar, though, until the end of the year, when I will decide if he's earned it. When people hear the word "slave" though, they automatically tend to think he's already collared. My idea of the collar, which may differ from others, is that it is the equivalent of a wedding ring in terms of symbolizing long-term committment. I will never legally marry again (been there, done that), but the idea of having a slave collared for life is extremely appealing to Me. [;)]
