There are better terms...

The term "gays swingers" comes most easily to mind. Especially if you read some of what Jack Rinella has written about it.

http://www.leatherviews.com/cols/search2.asp

So I am always terribly amused when women and straight men refer to themselves as "Old Guard".

They don't even come close.

you're welcome...btw, Archer is on that site, under bio's...A...but don't tell him...

He knows chelle...Gwen (site owner/creator) is a good friend of ours. She/he (damn I hate the promoun thing) asked me for the pic. I'm on there also under Bios and Bootblacks.

Belegant (giggles, sorry, only time...)

i was trying not to encourage his quest for pomposity...God knows theres enough pompous Doms out there...i would say you could take up the search for him, but by definition it would be inherently un-you...

pomposity - ostentation: lack of elegance as a consequence of being pompous and puffed up with vanity

"old guard" refers to a various groups of gay men during a period roughly spanning the end of WWII to the mid to late 1960s.  Brought to you by the same uber noble men who brought you glory holes, bath houses and anonymous sex.  I don't say that to be disrespectful but to provide a frame of reference for those who love to blather on about how noble they were.

"Old Guard" with capitals refers to a pompous ass 9 times out of 10 (Archer and a few others being the 1 out of 10 who aren't pompous asses).  It is used by people who can't stand on their own and need to borrow someone else's soapbox so they can imagine themselves looking down on everyone else.  It is just one more version of "my label is shinier than your label" game.

"We announced in "We Know Who We Are" that "The party that was the '70s is over." Walking the halls of this bathhouse, I was more than ever convinced that this is true.  The point missed by many formulating "safer sex" guidelines--and I include myself in this criticism--is that what a subset of us eroticized in the '70s was spontaneity and abandon.  In addition to the 1,000 or so gay men who've made the ultimate sacrifice as soldiers in the sexual revolution, we have lost a way of life.  The equation has changed, but we have not--the settings have not.  A demoralization and anguish of untold proportions hung in the silence of the halls at the East Side Sauna.  The image that struck me was one of little boys lost--each wondering around aimlessly, looking for mommy or daddy, holding on to his penis for what small comfort might be left in this hostile, frightening world.  Each seemed utterly selfish in his despair:  two men approaching one another in a hallway would, in an instant, search the face of the other for some sign that contact, comfort was possible and not finding it, would pass without a word onto the next candidate.  The eyes seem to beg:  is it you?  Are you the one who will love me?"

What????? Hell I gotta work on my poposity then cause I'm losing my touch. LOL

I've known a few wonderfull men who could make a legitimate, textbook dates, claim to being old guard. Started their journey in the gay leather circles between the mid 40's and mid 50's. To a man they all looked back on that time in very much a Tale of Two Cities kinda way. "It was the best of times It was the worst of times..." The same can be said for the couple dozen men I know who were what often is called the second generation of Old Guard those who served under those textbook date men.
Most of them also had the Tale of Two Cities hindsight. I think as you move farther along down time that peoplestart to see it as a "Golden Age" of leather. Personally I think that the Golden age thing is more likely right around the 2000 mark.

It is a far far better thing I do now than I have ever done..........

Prinsexx, I spent a little time in a certain bathhouse in Atlanta. Also visited a couple, DC, Houston, Charlotte, New Orleans. This was a long, long time ago.

You'd be surprised how many of the men who were there were there for a connection, and not just sex. They were there to talk, and to sit next to someone who was not there to grade or judge them. Just to accept them as they were.

Yes, I know how horrible and scummy and disgusting men are. I agree, by and large. But then there are men who are just like women. They have holes in their hearts that they want to fill, and they are doing the best they know how to try and connect.

Well, long and other topic, yes?

There's a big difference between calling yourself a member of the old guard and embracing certain old guard traditions...

and in the end, anyone can call themselves that.. its just a description...

It's deceitful.  If you are cool with that, fine.  More than anything it's funny when a younger, straight guy claims to be Old Guard.  He's just showing everyone that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

People call themselves dominant and they are not.. I think deceitful is going a bit far

the original title of this post is old guard lifestyle -- that's all I'm refering to

please note my lack of capital letters when saying old guard.. its a mentality.. its deceitful if someone says.. I was a member of the Old Guard leathermen way back in the day... and they were not... but I have never heard anyone claim that -- I have and many others will adhere to certain traditions.. the words old guard are not exclusive to that particular era or those men.

Now I have another question, Are the people who live by the rules of Old Guard all gays? I like the Rules  in the Old Gaurd lifestyle but I am NOT gay!!

Some of the activities that the old guard are known for, have carried over into straight BDSM society. You do not have to be gay to be influenced by some of those things. Speaking for myself, protocols, rituals and some behaviour models all resonated positively with me and helped make my M/s relationships all that more interesting.

OF course you can use the rules, but you can't call yourself Old Guard when you are hetero
Well you can, but then we call you gay. (and you will still be welcome here)

I'm with you here.  I embrace the Old Guard traditions and protocols and I am not gay.  I know of many others who are hetero or bi who also embrace these protocols and traditions.  They have definatley found their way into a more general bdsm populace of slave training irregardless of sexual preference.

The original old guard was exclusively gay.  Those who claim to live by a set of rules aren't.  However, one thing you should keep in mind that many of the "rules" are the imagination of overly romantic people dreaming of an age and a group with which they had no contact.

It's a little like SCA types who dream of an age of honor and beauty that was actually a time of brutality, ignorance and prejudice.

Read a bit of Jack Rinella and Guy Baldwin
