Much like BDSM and the various philosophies, I note a diverse range of responses to this question! So I'll add Mine....
I'm married (seven years) and been with the boy for ten years. I met him in a fetish nightclub but we were also vanilla from day one. We've tried it all from TPE, EPE, M/s, to IE - we just do what works for us to make a kinky marriage work long-term. What works, you ask? Figuring out what works for you and disregarding all the "rules" that others in BDSM often dictate. He (w a capital H, thank you very much_ is My slave, yet he is My equal partner, he is My slut and boytoy and whatever else I want him to be. And I am his Wife yet also his Mistress. Personally, I could not see having a serious relationship nor a marriage that could not combine both facets of Myself. I am vanilla and I am BDSM therefore in My marriage I want a relationship that not only accepts but addresses and benefits My vanilla needs as well as My BDSM needs. As for worrying about seeing the boy as property - I worry not. Yes he is My property and I viewed him as such from the moment I laid eyes on him. (I Want That Toy For My Very Own!!!) But any Dominant/Top with any degree of humanity and empathy can ALSO view property as being human and a person too, and should treat others with respect and decency.
Granted, I have other personal submissives that I cherish and somewhat also view as property, but I view them with empathy and compassion as well. Objectification is certainly different from slavery and human property should not be constantly regarded as mere objects ! No human could withstand being treated as an object for long-term.
And while I do believe in the proper compartmentalization for some, specifically those uable to find a BDSM and vanilla partner, and I do compartmentalize My professional Domme life as well as with some personals that are not part of My "body-fluid bonded poly-family", I personally couldn't stand having My marriage not include some form of BDSM as well. And I hope to always have enough empathy to do the proper introspection in order to verify that My views of human property remain in the right perspective.
