British Telecom are in trouble with the Information Commissioner - for spying on the internet surfing habits of their customers.

The spying was done anonymously, but critically without the permission or knowledge of the customers. When customers noticed what was going on and contacted BT, they were told that the problem must be a virus - nothing to do with BT.

Apparently all this was a trial of some software designed to spy on surfing habits to profile customers' interests, so they could be spammed with adverts that met their interests.

Great isnt it? And of course, there is nothing to fear.

Yah but we in america, you know the place with a constitution that we can wipe our asses with? That place?  Well we upstaged ya all in the uk when we had att and verizon routing literally everythign through the nsa on their main trunks.

Then when they got busted well congress simply gave them immunity along with bushco for constitutional violations and war crimes.

So TOP THAT!  har!

Lady Ellen i thought this had long been the case, with firms reading your cookies, then sending ads based on that. Whats more of a worry to me is that financial transactions over the net are not totally secure, and criminals can hack into supermarket computer files and get ones credit card details ect.

A lot of this spying on Pc`s goes back to the war on terror issue. Sooner or later they will be able to check just about everything we do. Legislation is needed now.

....while unsavoury, in the past it was barely legal...(read the fine print in the various TOS). The problem this time is that there was no consent.
