Most people, if they think of hypno, think of the induction process. That's the bit I caricatures above: you know... "look into my eyes". I do use eyes, as they are a very good indicator of when someone has gone under....but never tried that very stagey approach to it.
So, first induction: the tipping of someone into a hypnotic state. Many approaches work... you just need to know what works best for you. In my own experience, almost all inductions rely on some form of distraction technique (although books will often write up distraction as a technique in its own right).
But then there's what you do once someone is under... which can be very wide-ranging. Relax them. Create specific physical or emotional states (horny is one I quite like). Set up triggers. Play around with reality. And so on. There are do's and don'ts to all of the above... and ways that are more likely to work than others.
Last of all is the whole care thing surrounding hypno. You are "playing with" something very delicate - viz. someone else's mind. Actually, most minds are pretty robust and chances of doing any harm are slight. But some are less so ... and there is a whole subset of protocols that you need to observe around this.
In extremis, there are categories of people you probably ought not to touch with a bargepole (according to most text books, those with epilepsy - though I am not convinced that the blanket prohibition makes sense)... and also people who are already on the verge of some sort of mental health issue.
Not that you SHOULDN'T... but that if you haven't got some understanding of where you are going, you will be woefully under-equipped to deal with any flare-up whilst someone is under.
