This is where the cost of fuel is going to really drive inflation.  I doubt we would ever see a real independent truckers strike (though there was something close in the (?) early 80's), but this could certainly create some disruption.  And that was before the J.I.T. standard so many businesses have gone too.  Back then, there were still warehouses.

Yes, the problem is that companies use the trucks for "warehouses" these days.
You can be so "efficient" that it makes life not worth living.
And freight rates haven't gone up in the last ten years even to keep up with inflation.
There's so much money in so few hands now just like in 1929.

Humm, just like 1929?
So you feel like I do, that we are in a recession, sliding into a full depression?

The next depression will be a bit different than the last one.

Oh this is just the tip of the iceberg,   The 100 year war in Iraq/Iran, gas prices and all that is associated with gas will be going up, soon food will be even higher, the mortgage housing debacle, unemployment is up, increasing illegal immigration, hospitals and schools are being overloaded, the sliding value of the dollar, social security in trouble, personally I feel that violent crime is up nationwide, dependance on foreign products and services, did I forget anything?

azropedntied -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/3/2008 8:17:08 PM)

15 years ago i had a generous food budget of 400.00 , now with an extra mouth to feed  and still has two dogs i can not feed us for a month for 400 buxs anymore .unless we go to eating  very lean with alotta pasta .I see the effects and have for years .
I would love to see the truckers park for a week long  national vacation .In fact park right around Washington and every state  capitol building for a week .
Why is it we can not  just us the us oil and stop selling it  overseas ?then Stop buying  mid east oil ?
Here in az i see alot of "flex fuel " trucks and cars on the road yet i have not ever seen one fuel station for alternative fuel .
Why is it solar is not being used ? so many of these problem s just seem like an easy fix yet they go unchecked and biz as usual.
soon gas will be 5 dollars a gallon and yet we could be putting American farmers to work making fuel and bio fuels  for far less .Bio d.. would lower interstate truckers  fuel bills and trickle down the line .
Ahhh what do i know i am just one guy thinking .

Moloch -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/3/2008 8:24:33 PM)

The 1920's1930's recession came because companies kept expanding and making more crap when every one who could afford it already had a car/appliance there was no more market for it but they kept building more. Plus lots of Americans were buying on credit...  Many farms had to be foreclosed....
Wait this sounds really familiar!!! Replace farms with Private housing!

you do understand that if my truck's wheels aren't turning, i'm making no money, right?  so if i park my truck for a week, that's a week with no pay, which means i can't afford to buy food, pay rent, etc...would you go a week with no pay to attempt something like this?

edited to add:  & i definitely wouldn't be able to pay the tickets that would pile up nor the towing fee for parking my truck where it shouldn't be.....

Hang on to your seats boys, it is going to be a bumpy ride.
We certainly have not hit bottom yet, at least many are aware of what is going on.
Don't expect the government to share what is going on, but hell who can't see it?

lilsubl > that is why i did not use the term strike , instead i used vacation .everyone needs a vacation  all i suggest is take a vacation at the same time be it 3 days or a week . Yes by all means make your money live your life  pay the bills etc .would i go a week with out pay ? Yes  i have  ,matter a fact i went a month with no pay when  i worked grocery stocking shelves  and cutting meat and the  chain wanted to take away our overtime , remove our health care benifits for a cheap immitation of health care plan .
Do you not think that parking a trucking system will bring about an alert and change ?I recall some  people who dumped tea into a harbor  many years ago , thier cry was > dont tread on me < i am not saying you should have to suffer nor do with out .Yet is your life getting better with the cost of fuel  rising and economy  slamming downward ?When do we say enough?  when fuel reaches 5 dolars a gallon ? 7.00 ?10.00 ? Think of the impact all the collective silent diesel motors would bring for a cap or freeze on prices .Yes i know what your going to say  but still my truck is still and my wallet gets no cash .Yet many will think  differntly when the cost of not only fuel but all good hauled  raises  outta reach across the board .
This can never make an impact unless you have a massive collective for change .This crumb bush shall be sending us in the form of a tax relief what shall that do ?why not spend it on a week off sending a message ?
Like i said i am not in power  nor do i have all the answers  all i know is the way we are going currently is not working .Not for us  nor generations to come .Maybe its just the child of the 60's in me but there has got to be something better than complain while we fill up and just take it with mumbles of this sucks ..
I for one also do not buy anything  that says made in china on it if i can help it , and i have put MANY thing  right back on the shelf .BTW thanks to all those truckers out there .

TheHeretic -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/3/2008 9:28:53 PM)

It wouldn't take a week, L.  If the truckers could organize enough to shut down en masse for four days, there would be a ripple through the entire economy.  Oh sure, the dumb smartasses would talk about how easy the commute was right up until they hit a grocery store with no milk.  The trucks might very well be busy as hell getting those distribution centers filled back up before the impact was even felt in many places.  But it would be felt, and the highest levels would notice.

i do remember my ex telling me about a time when the powers that be in Los Angeles decided that no trucks could be there except for a few hours in the middle of the night...they all parked outside the city & waited...i believe that only took 2 days...
but who would this shut down hurt?  not the ones who actually have some control over the fuel prices...they're not going to feel it at all...they'll just wait till we come to our senses & use it as an excuse to raise fuel prices even more...it would be Joe Consumer who wouldn't be able to get milk for his kids...how would that help?
4 days i could maybe pull off, but 7 days & i'm not only without pay for that week, i'm fired, they're giving my company truck to some other driver...& again, would it really impact the price of fuel?  why don't you all shut down your vehicles for a week & stay home too??  if truckers not using fuel would send a message, what about all the other vehicles?
are you all aware that more & more freight is going by rail these days?  i'm thinking that if we show them  how to do without us for a week, they'll just ship more by rail for the local drivers to deliver...
i'm a child of the 60's myself, but the 60's are over & i'm old now & want a steady paycheck so that i don't end up sleeping in my car......

TheHeretic -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/3/2008 10:46:02 PM)

Yep.  Joe Consumer takes it in the shorts, but with damn near every bit of business in the country running on a "Just In Time" model, you can bet corporate HQ is going to feel it too.

You know something else?  Joe Consumer is already paying $13 for a can of coffee that cost $8 two years ago.  Consider the fees truckers pay to be the backbone of our economy.  The chickenshit they put up with every day.  Unless you haul household furniture, jet engines, or high-end hazmat, can you and your company afford to keep going as is?

DomKen -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/3/2008 11:01:56 PM)

The independent truckers did strike in Febuary 1974 over diesel prices. It might be time to do it again although this time without all the violence.

GMRTGS -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/3/2008 11:44:55 PM)

Truckers independent or not cannot strike, union or not, they no longer have the luxury of striking after 911, a presidential directive was issued an now with provisions, changes in the national transportation act, national security act, and  the patriot act, makes it illegal for any transportation, energy or commodity group to strike, it is considered a act of treason, a violation of national security. I know this because I was handed  the documents related to this when  we qualified our company  for work with the government. When you get a new commercial driver license you sign several waivers in order to get that id, just like we all do now  for sobriety  and seat belt laws.In order for our farm to qualify for farm loans we had to sign some very extensive waivers allowing them all kinds of compliance and access. Each time I have noticed more red ink and less rights. It is in all the fine legalese print that most never understand,  some of the key words are must comply with all Federal Regulations governing these acts. Now the question whether  the president will exercise force enforcement is whole another matter.Case in point, here in Florida if you fail a commercial vehicle inspection your dl is automatically subject to suspension, if you refuse inspection immediate arrest.Just fuel to the fire

TheHeretic -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/3/2008 11:45:42 PM)

Was it really all the way back in '74?  You're right, the violence became the story on the last strike.  I'm thinking more along the lines of a demonstration of power, to bring the other side to the table, than a full-on strike until they get an agreement.

Yeah, they need to put a stop to that shit.
After 9/11 instead of having more military, spies and assassins what do the people in Washington who are supposed to be running our govt do, start another beaurocracy with even more college graduates sitting at desks writing things on paper.

GMRTGS -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/4/2008 12:07:02 AM)

For the record I am agree with most of the comments on the board  sadly though we lost control of the situation a long time ago.  Oil companies are now owned not by us, but by larger overseas owners either, directly or indirectly. Same goes for most of the more lucrative industries and they are all controlled by boards thats primary purpose is to bleed America dry.

azropedntied -> RE: If you bought it, a truck brought it. (4/4/2008 12:08:39 AM)

The sky is falling the sky is falling !Once again I never said S T R I K E , i said take a collective vacation ,just like some educators do when they wish to make an issue known, suddenly a sick out .
Life is full of choices i for one shall never sign for a bad choice , why would you work day in day out long hours away from home then  sign away rights saying if your wanting a better situation than what is being told you have to take ,that is an act of treason .Are some things of more value than just chasing the dollar ?like your freedom, your privacy ,price fixing ,price gouging ,over taxation,  What shall  they wish you to sign away next ? and will you ?
