I have to disagree, MC; one can watch sports impartially (as far as the teams go), just to see the skill of the atheletes involved.

I agree with Level but just you complain at a match about the home team hatchet man or clogger and recognise the skill of the opponent who caused the clogger to start clogging and I know those around you will not be appreciative.lol
Of course when the away team clogger does his business then thats different He's the biggest barsteward that ever trod the face of the Earth..

It's the desperate need to belong that makes people sing the national tune so fiercely. People feel stronger in groups - the pull of the crowd.

Possibly, but this doesn't explain why British sporting fans are peculiarly enthusiastic when it comes to singing the national anthem.

Judging by what i've seen on television, British sports fans are enthusiastic about singing virtually anything. I wonder whether it's the anticipation of the coming match (or whatever) and air of excitement that makes them seem so enthusiastic when singing the NA rather than the fact it's the NA.

Status: offline 		It's the pack mentality. A good reason to tip your head back and bawl something at the top's of your lungs in a very irreverant, reverant manner. No different from yelling "blue is the colour, football is the game, we're altogether.... etc etc." (Funny the things you remember from childhood). We're British remember - don't take anything seriously for gawd's sake!

Did Pompey ever get out of the bottom of the third div?

Maybe you just have not paid much attention to other countries

Here is the Canadian fans doing the anthem in both English and French  being it was played in Ontario the english segment  really turned up the volume and the enthusiam http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IcMkRBdqYCc 

Here is another in Edmonton Canada at an Oilers hockey game  -----this video  the Canadian  fans start by  singing the US's Star Spangled Banner(kind of surprising to see at any sporting event having the oppositions fans singing your anthem without making it a total disgrace) before singing Oh Canada.  I guess Canadians must miss not having 2 anthems to sing these days...we use to start the day with "god Save the Queen" before following with "Oh  Canada"   http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MFOdiM5GDpY

Status: offline 		Hockey will always bring out the patriotism in Canadians like nothing else will. We send the Stanley Cup on tour to our troops overseas!

The last time Canada won the gold medal at the Olympics, the streets were deserted across the country. When they played the national anthem, everybody in the bar I was in got up, stood attention and sang along. I expect most bars in the country did the same thing. There was an American, a Brit and a Nigerian in my group, and they were all pretty freaked out. They'd all been here for about 10 years and that display of patriotism just seemed so un-Canadian to their experience. They all agreed it would never happen back home, but I suspect an English win in the World Cup might just do it.

As a Brit....the only time I have ever seen Rule Britannia is at the Albert Hall and thoroughly enjoyed it, being there, you just get caught up in it....like any multi person event.

Status: offline 		The more I travel, the more sentimental I get about Oh Canada. 

The Simpsons put it best in their episode about Boy Scouts and baseball:   anthems should be not an ode "to war, like our [US] National Anthem, but a sweet soothing hymn like O Canada”.
It made me think about the lyrics for the first time since childhood when I memorised them without really understanding them, and I like to think in its English translation, it's very Canadian that we sing the equivalent of: 'Thanks a lot, Canada, eh.  Ya pushed us out of a snowbank, here's a 2-4, and we'll help ya out anytime, just give us a call'.  No rockets, bombs, no fighting all night, just happy to be here with yuz, tanks.
But I still think we should replace the Governor General's theme 'God Save the Queen' with 'The War of 1812'.

Meatcleaver i am between Porstmouth and Brighton. Originally i am from Brixton/Clapham and Chelsea was the closest team for me. I have been going since i was 4 and even watched Jimmy Greaves play ! Shows how long ago it was....

MontrealPhoenix made a good point: perhaps it's not the anthem and more to do with gearing up for the event.

It's noticeable that when England play, all the flags have the name of the town or city that the person originates. Does any other people do this? 'Suggests our towns and cities are of great significance.
