The fans that do that are from the smaller clubs on the whole.

NG, some even have the names of the local bar on them. i think most people are rightly proud of where they come from. It gives a sense of belonging.

Nonsense.

Every flag has the name of the club on it.

If you had said supporters of the bigger clubs don't tend to follow England, I'd agree with you.

Man United lads couldn't give a flying one about England, primarily because they play in Europe every year so save their money for following United 'round Europe.

Viva Ronaldo after he'd just put United one up in Rome http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb77jvyly2o&NR=1

The few United lads who do follow England would have Manchester across the middle of the flag, all the same.

Maybe it's cause we Yanks lent you such awesome music for your anthem? [:)]

Yeah?  You'll see plenty of Chelsea and Man Utd following England at the World Cup or the Euro - if they manage to qualify.  And some of the snottier fans down here sneer at the whole practice of carrying flags.  It seen as being about as cool as waving a wooden rattle.

Chelsea maybe. 'Ever been to Old Trafford? There's some graffiti outside the ground........"Fuck England, this is the Republic of Mancunia". Fairly typical of United lads.

You must know the United song about Ronaldo that finishes "makes England look shite"?

'Totally agree with them. England flags are for daytrippers who wouldn't know what it's like to stand in a rain at somewhere like Port Vale on a Tuesday night.

You've started something here, DC.

The second - granted. To be fair though, there aren't that many of us and we'd fought so many wars, and wiped the floor with all-comers, we were no longer interested - nothing left to prove - didn't count on Hitler and associates getting ideas above their station, though.

The first - the Americans only turned up when everyone else had fought themselves to a standstill. The equivalent would be like watching two lions savage one another, only for a dingo to turn up and pick at the scraps :-)

Actually God Save the Queen dates back to the early 1600s at least, and is NOT based on an American tune. It is the Star Spangled banner that is sung to a pre-existing song: The Anacreontic Song, which was the official song of a group of amateur British musicians...

Just teasing, NG.

RealityLicks -> RE: British posters/national anthems.... (4/6/2008 1:50:46 PM)

No, never been to Old Trafford and I don't doubt it but following England is obviously many things to many people.

I really was just kidding, Arpig. Thanks for the info, though. I think I once heard/read that the "Star-Spangled Banner" was set to a drinking song. Any idea if that's true?

Arpig -> RE: British posters/national anthems.... (4/6/2008 4:55:23 PM)

More or less true according to what I can find online google The Anacreontic Song
