i don't think of him as a racist...i thought of his actions as being incredibly insensitive....but not racist.  People seem to think black people go around shouting "racist!" at anyone whose opinon differs from Al Sharpton's.  Just so you know...Al Sharpton and those of his ilk don't represent the black consciousness.  They are loud and on television daily, using the race card at every given  moment...but they aren't "Black America". They may be the voice you hear at Jena Six rallies (and yes, having a voice at times is necessary...crucial, even)...but just as Pat Buchanan isn't the voice of  "White America"  Neither does Al Sharpton speak for all African-Americans.   In reality, most African-Americans that i know try to be very careful about calling someone a racist.  The aftermath is more bullcrap than most want to deal with.  And pretty damned hard to prove.

Good post, my friend.

We're kinda-sorta one country..... sometimes. And I think we're slooooooowly making headway. But things will never be perfect, there is always going to be some dumbass that can't see past the color of someone's skin.

I don’t think he’s a racist either. I am also quite aware that Al Sharpton, et al, don’t even come close to representing Black America – at least not amongst the Black People I know, which include colleges, friends and family. But it is a matter of course in American politics to defame the opposition. McCain will be accused of being racist. Actually, I tend to see the mudslinging in American politics (at the national level at least) not so much as attempts to win through smear tactics (although I believe the participants consciously see it that way) but rather as a necessary psychological affirmation. Humans have a need to believe that they are noble and good and that their enemies are slime. It helps to justify the less than noble things that we do.

NSFW, but perhaps the definitive work on Dr. King.

Another look at what Dr King might say today, from People magazine. They ran a little spot on the book What Would Martin Say? by his attorney, Clarence B. Jones.

On the presidential race:

"He'd be exhilarated that an African-American and a woman have the possibility of being elected, and that Obama had the courage to start a dialogue about the 800-pound gorilla of race relations."

On the Iraq war:

"He'd be against the preemptive war, but would understand why Bush did it."

On affirmative action:

"I think he'd say we don't need it."

What was he like?

"Very humorous. Fearless, but aware of his mortality. There was an unspoken assumption that he wouldnt' live a long time. The anniversary of his death is very hard."

In fact, I’ve not heard any organized criticism of him for it at all during the election season so far. Could it be that somebody decided to hold off on it?

One possible reason is that he's tight with the traveling press corps.  Gives them a lot of time, is friendly, approachable, etc.  This is one of the reasons Bush got such an easy ride the first time around.  The press corps (and this comes from a book written by one of 'em) had a lot better time hanging around Bush than Gore.

The media can be very chummy when it suits their need but in my observations – while granting exceptions – they are soulless sociopaths that will be chummy with you one moment and then turn upon you and consume you (figuratively speaking, of course) the next.

Politicians are always fair weather friends. Votes are all that matter-and smoke and mirrors are just a distraction to shift things in favor. My respect for a politician never comes until I see what they do AFTER the votes are all counted.

Well, that reassures me in ways you will never fathom.

40 years later, after the nigger dies, he thinks its a good deal.

Well when the Dems start spending the nasty money (which they have scads more than Reps)

We will see him toasting the Senator with nigger kids that denyed them the old racist, what was his name? Jethro Hill?

We will see his slipping envelopes filled with good wishes to Keating (though I dont think he did)

We will see his face morphed into Johnson and Nixon in the Iraq leading the pack.

So, he spent not a dime on Pork----hella good man, there.
How much did he vote for Iraq war?
Oh, that aint pork.

Clinton did whatever (252 or so), and thats cool, and Obama did whatever (52 or so)  .and my man JMc? (0).

What is pork?  is it cutting a fat hog in the ass? and if it was spent in america, for the ketchup board, while I think it could have been spent better, it was not spent to train 'police' troops in afganistan who after six years 'still aren't ready', but you can be a fucking law enforcement officer in this country (certified) in around 18 months, would one of you big heads walk me thru this?

I agree, tulip. Doesn't mean Dr King wouldn't have said such, but I don't know it, and I don't think Mr Jones does, either.

New Kids, huh?....... they're back together, but that bodes ill for the music world.......

It's rather convenient to try and head this shit off now....Instead of letting your competition bring it up.

It goes to show a lack of understanding and a weakness on McCain's part. People do make mistakes. It's not the end of the world. But again, it shows a lack of strength and conviction.

What bothers me is his response to why it took so long. The politician in him really came out at that point.

Chaka, chaka, chaka, chaka khan
Chaka khan, chaka khan, chaka khan
Chaka khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, chaka khan
Let me rock you, that's all i wanna do
Chaka khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, chaka khan
Let me rock you, let me feel for you
Chaka khan let me tell you what i wanna do
Do you feel for me, the way i feel for you
Chaka khan let me tell you what i wanna do
I wanna love you, wanna hug you, wanna squeeze you too
Let me take you in my arms
Let me fill you with my charms, chaka
'cause you know that i'm the one to keep you warm
Chaka, i'll make you more than just a physical dream
I wanna rock you, chaka
Baby, cause you make me wanna scream
Let me rock you, rock you

Baby, baby, when i look at you
I get a warm feeling inside
There's something about the things you do
That keeps me satisfied

I wouldn't lie to you, baby
It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that i got for you, baby
Makes me wanna sing

Chorus:
I feel for you
I think i love you
I feel for you
I think i love you

Melle mel:
Chaka khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, chaka khan
Let me rock you, that's all i wanna do
Chaka khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, chaka khan
Let me rock you, let me feel for you
Feel for you

Baby, baby, when i lay with you
There's no place i'd rather be
I can't believe, can't believe it's true
The things that you do to me

I wouldn't lie to you, baby
I'm physically attracted to you
This feeling that i got for you, baby
There's nothing that i wouldn't do

Chorus

Yes sir, one more time
Say yeah
I feel for you (i think i love you)
I feel for you (i, i, i think i love you)

Melle mel:
Chaka khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, chaka khan
Let me rock you, that's all i wanna do
Chaka khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, chaka khan
Let me rock you, let me feel for you
Chaka khan won't you tell me what you wanna do
Do you feel for me, the way i feel for you
Chaka khan let me tell you what i wanna do
I wanna love you, wanna hug you, wanna squeeze you too
Let me take you in my arms
Let me fill you with my charms, chaka
'cause you know that i'm the one to keep you warm
Chaka, i'll make you more than just a physical dream
I wanna rock you, chaka
Baby, cause you make me wanna scream
Feel for you

I feel for you (oooh, feel for you)
I feel it too (oooh, feel for you)
I feel for you (oooh, feel for you)

Chorus
