I can see why you might prefer leather to rope but honestly if you take the time to learn bondage and then suspension skills the idea leather is more secure is really a fallacy.   Good Hemp or say MFP or a climbing rope is rated and the gear you can find is rated to 30kn or better.  That is pretty darn secure.  If you rig correctly that is...

You're so right there. Leather is very strong however...I ride horses and it's a common practice not to let horses run out in fields with halters made of synthetic materials (nylon usually) because if the horse were to get caught on something the halter wouldn't break and the horse could be injured. You're supposed to use leather halters because the leather, under enough force (a panicking horse) will break and set them free.

So, obviously the synthetic materials are stronger than leather but that doesn't mean someone can't prefer leather over them, it's merely personal preference.

Speaking of rope...anyone going to Shibaricon?

For heavy duty stuff like suspension, I would tend to just make a girl a reenforced leather harness. I trust well built and padded leather gear and welded chain with shackles MUCH more than I do rope for that. And I can release someone much faster as well.

I don't think the speed with which you can release someone had much to do with using leather or rope, but with knowing how to use these materials.

My boyfriend bought some black and green nylon rope that was on sale in the Automotive department at Wal-Mart. [:)]  It's slick and can slide, but can still be tied tight enough to not come undone. It was a "let's see if we like this without spending lots of money" type of thing, but we ended up liking it, and I very much enjoy the slight but still noticable rope burns ^^

So I'm at a big play party (350+ C.O.P.E.) and one of my girlfriends insists I buy her some rope fom Garr's ropes - because it's purple.  (sigh)

I talk to Garr, and buy enough to do a shibari harness.  I take the rope to the play area, tie her up, lead her across the vast dungeon space and throw her down on a mattress. She immediately starts having an orgasm.  In the debrief she is amazed that she came without me touching her.

Later I remark, to Garr, "Damn, that was some good rope!"

The techniques done in the pictures on my profile cant be done very well with just any rope... The Japanese Hemp\Jute rope used there is made by Denki Ackechi (no longer available), Hiruku Yukimora (Rope Rick Sauves sells)  and Mirua Takumi (the red rope, its from Japan and he doesnt export)   Now I or Master K could of done it with rope made by Osada Steve or Monk. But the Monk rope need the buttons on the ends and would have to be cut to exact lenth or 7 to 8 meters  to make the tie work correctly.

The ties in your profile can be done with any hemp rope of the right thickness - the length isn't important (can *affect* it, but isn't *important*), and neither is the end finishing.  They're lovely ties, BTW, if you did them.  They're lovely even if you didn't :)

Well if you read the profile the non red ropes ties are Master K whom I photograph for.  Tell you what...pick any rope artist here in the us and the ropes and ask them to duplicate it and lets see the results. My bet here is that it will look "close" but not exactly the same thing.  But I can understand how you would come to that conclusion.

If you want to get anal retentive about "proper length" for the tie, then you would have to cut the rope to each partner you play with.  I keep hearing "well the Japanese use X length ropes only", well guess what?  Japanese girls are a wee bit smaller than your average American girl.

So  I took a look at your photos, they are amazing ties.  Some of them are so complex infact, I bet if you asked the original rigger to duplicate them, with the same rope, they would look "close" but not exactly the same thing.

Kinbakudayo -> RE: What kind of ropes do you like to use? (4/28/2008 5:52:16 AM)

Hello SNoB,
Well I can understand under how someone would draw your conclusions.  However I do explain the difference between kinbaku and shibari in my profile and other places here.  So I will explain you are kind of right but you are missing something here that will make sense when I explain it.

While it is absoulutely true that everyones body is different and a tie will be efffected by conditions at that moment or even the look might change a little due to body shape. Kinbaku is based on fundamental rules that build the tie.

Each tie in kinbaku is based on fundamentals on which every tie in the art form is constructed.  Standardized sizes and rope types do in fact work on a number of different body types very safely.  If rope in a kinbaku tie isnt long enough you have two choices.  You can artisticly attach another rope to the tie to continue on or use what the knots at the end of the rope to make a point where the rope will attach to the tie because the knot will hold againt what you fasten it to.
The other reason I can say this is that hemp rope designed for human bondage takes into account that hemp has a very good surface area to hold against itself.  The knots or "buttons" that the japanese add to the ends of the ropes take further advantage of this.

Because the ties are based on fundamentals, it is possible to reproduce results that one did before ( now I am not saying down to each twist or little artistic change.  I also of course agree that because one persons body is different from the other is one reason as well and is a good reason why not.  One persons body may of course react to something at 12 that was perfectly fine at 10). My bet is what will happen is that when someone that doesnt understand the rules of how kinbaku works attempts this that it will fail pretty badly.  Which is the reason I made that statement.  So my response to impgrls statement is take the pepsi challenge here and prove me wrong.

Cheers...

I thought the Japanese traditionalists use jute, not hemp.
