Considering the importance of good ethics with regard to trade, what a shame one of the UK's largest grocers is trying wriggle out of its' responsibilities.

quote:

The supermarket chain Asda wants overseas suppliers excluded from a new code of conduct which is designed to ensure that the big grocers do not use their buying power to impose unfair trading terms.
The UK arm of the US-based Wal-Mart empire has included the demand in its response to the Competition Commission's "remedies" statement, published after a near-two-year inquiry into the £125bn grocery market.

It's not really that surprising that the UK branch of Walmart should protest at being held accountable for holding up good practice in its suppliers. These companies rely on the exploitation of workers and on dodgy manufacturing to further their profits.

Is it well known that Asda's owned by Walmart in the UK? And if so, is there a movement to boycott them? They've got to be kicked where it hurts.

It does seem that the large supermarkets use their major purchasing power in a very brutal manner. I notice that the impoverished consumers dont complain much.
Its the wealthy who exhibit a conscience in this area mainly I suspect because rising prices dont dent their large, quite frequently tax derived, salaries.

With regards to standards in the overseas markets is that not the proper province of the governments that exist there ?
After all they often have airlines, large numbers of police, expensive miltary establishments, luxurious government buildings and palaces, why not let the peasants there enjoy a bit of the wealth.
Only arskin'.
