TwistedLeather -> Little bit silly, but i need some help (4/7/2008 12:18:19 PM)

This seems like a silly thing to be posting, but i need some help and thought maybe someone out there might be able to give it.

i'm a mother now, and my two oldest are getting into playing the Pokemon trading card game. Well.... years ago, i played it too, and i held on to my cards just in case my kids ever wanted to play. i didn't realize then how much the game would change, so now i have all these first edition cards (mostly) and some promo's and i guess a few collectors cards. Heck, i still have two of the promotional cards still in their plastic wrapping!

But here's my problem... i can't find anyone in my area (Denver) area that does trade ins for this particular game, and i'm having a hell of a time finding anyone who sells the starter decks too! They sell the booster packs, but that won't help my kids out. i'd like to swap out my old cards for some of the newer ones so my girls can really customize their decks and have fun without having to worry about them destroying mine, which i guess are quickly becoming collectors stuff.

Does anyone have any suggestions or have a link that can help me out here?

Have you tried ebay or amazon.com?

my problem is, my girls have different tastes and want to be able to shop for themselves. Can't do that with ebay. You try explaining to a 10 y/o that they didn't get their really badly wanted psych deck cause someone else got lucky. And i've had bad experiences with amazon so i tend to keep away from them.

First edition, still in the wrapping?

Dont swap them. There are totally insane geeks out there (middle aged men) who will pay good money!

There's a shop down the road from me where they sell these cards. The owner (bless him, poor desperate lonely man that he is) is fond of me and told me - under a promise not to tell anyone else (but hell, no one will know) that these geeks have some sort of surveillance going on - they know when the new packs arrive at his store - two weeks before theyre due to be on sale according to the release date. And this poor shopkeeper gets descended on and is forced to open the boxes so the geeks can get their fix early. I caught it happening - a man in his thirties, stood there opening pack after pack (and these things arent cheap) like a ten year old, exclaiming at any special ones and disappointed with repeats. £50-00 ($100-00) changed hands.

i'd be happy if i could find a store like that! i know the game is popular among kids, but i can't seem to find a place around here. i'm sure it's some itty bitty shop tucked away in a corner, but where the heck do i look?? The phone book isn't any help, and neither are the comic stores and game shops that i've called. *sigh* Oh well, guess i'll just keep looking.

i would suggest Googling hobby shops in your area.

That search turns up planes, cars, trains, models, rc cars, etc type stores.

Just what I was thinking.

I was thinking ebay too, or a toy store.  When my girl was into this years ago, I would just buy the packs of them that she would pick out, and hope for the best.  It's a hit or miss kind of thing, sort of like a gamble, but kind of exciting for her to go through them and find out if there were any good ones in the deck.  There were always at least one or two that she went apeshit over.  You end up spending a lot of money in the end, but the kid ends up with a collection they're happy with.  Oh, then they outgrow it.  lol.

oh yeah, and K-B toystore...

we are a Webkinz household...furry little buggers everywhere.  Pokemon fortunately passed us by.

TwistedLeather -> RE: Little bit silly, but i need some help (4/10/2008 8:07:13 PM)

Well, buying the little booster packs isn't an issue, except my girls need starters decks to begin with so they can actually play. They don't want just the cards, they actually want to play the game. Thanks for the K-B suggestion though! i had forgotten about that place! Have to check out Toys-R-Us as well. Been there for toys too many times, it hadn't occurred to me to look for cards there. *chuckle*

Have you tried Wizards of the Coast?  i don't have a link handy, but they carry a large selection of game cards.  You might try googling them.

Edited to add:  Here's a link.  http://www.wizards.com/

You can pick a starter pack up from anywhere online.  My advice would be to purchase a book to work on the rarity of the cards you have.  Foils and promotionals are more expensive.  Right now, Pokemon has lost some of it's appeal, but it goes in cycles.  My son plays, however the 'new' thang is Magic.

Amazon sell cards as well as ebay.  I believe Wizards of the Coast did start with Pokemon cards, but I think its gamefreaks now so you won't get new cards on WotC.  But you can try them.
