DelilahDeb -> How do you deal with scene EVENTs? (4/8/2008 2:03:17 PM)

I tend to wind up tight before an EVENT such as KinkFest. (I used to call it tourney fever when I was very active in the SCA.) Lots of prep,
lots of socializing ("are you going?"; "are you going?"), setting up dates with distant friends, and so on.

And then I get to the EVENT, and it is what it is, and I have a good time or a great time or a lousy time; (usually all of the above by turns); and I make sure (or I forget) to take care of myself during the EVENT, and then it's over.

And then I go home. To unpacking, to housekeeping, to life-stuff that I postponed because the EVENT was next week and I needed to get X (clothing, toy, scenario, presentation) done in time. And, damn, it's a downer. All my energy sort of drains out of my toes.

So...what do you do to prepare for an EVENT?
...what do you do to enjoy the now of the EVENT?
...what do you do to recover from the EVENT?
and
...how do you keep yourself from tripping over habits like mine?

SNoB -> RE: How do you deal with scene EVENTs? (4/8/2008 2:17:39 PM)

My preparation for kinkfest this year was pretty intense as I was on the committee, lots of extra planning and work beyond the normal clothes, toys, play dates.

As far as enjoying the event? It was difficult at times, working, trying to squeeze in workshops, spending time with friends,  trying my hardest to squeeze in some naps during the weekend.

My recovery was a tough one this year.  At the end of the weekend I went out to get my car from the hotel parking lot and found the back window smashed in and one of my toybags and my leather jacket missing.  I went to the hotel front desk to report the break in and found out that someone had turned my items into the front desk.  They must have thought they found a camera or a laptop, probably shocked the hell out of them when they actually opened the case.

So after I got that all sorted out, I came down with the flu and am still recovering from that.

I am going though  prolonged prep "as its  far out yet fast approaching " for Thunder in the mountains .Making check lists , reservations, checking plans ,thinking , re-thinking, maybe over thinking  cuz i am exited and thrilled to be attending this year .
What i find i Must do it pull in the reins some  and not hold  high expectations , nor a full list of agenda's .Rather  i wish the  event to just be , just to happen and unfold if you will .Sure i want to have dungeon time , meet with  others , attend the classes etc ,yet i have to keep whoa'n myself as i feel like a lil kid and holidays are fast approaching .
As far as recovery i tend to try and just think and reflect  in an afterglow type mode .
SNoB sucks about your ride and the flu n all but glad they turned in your bags  that at least was a plus  .

Thank you azropedntied, paying 50 bucks to get my window replaced isnt bad vs explaining to my insurance guy that im missing over a grand in "decrotive braided leather goods".

The flu has been horrible, but im almost better now.  I will soon be back to being only sick in the head.

Maybe it's just Me, but I didn't see the issue.  That could be because I'm rather similar in My approach.  (That's a little joke.)

My husband can tell you that I drive him absolutely nuts prior to an event.  I would say that it isn't as bad when it's an event that I had no hand in organizing, but in honesty, I would say it's just different.  The focus changes, but it's still just as bad.

One thing I have to add in here for Myself is between the shmoozing phase ("Are you going?") and the actual trip is the packing.  This is something that My husband can tell you is an event in itself.  Even an event that includes one overnight can include up to three days worth of packing, planning to pack, organizing, and detailing.  This is the part My husband has learned over the years to stay out of My immediate area, and just be responsible for ensuring the bags make it from where I am, to where they are put into the car by My sub.

For me, its all about the clothes.. I'm usually thinking weeks ahead about what I'll take with me if I'm traveling... and depends on how.. if I'm flying or going by motorcycle...

the clothes, its all about the clothes and the shoes for me.. *grin*

Are you sure we weren't separated at birth or something?

not to hijack...but I'm going to my very first event ever, and I don't even own any fetish wear! Girls, boys, bois, help me please! I need an outfit! I am stressing about the clothes! It's a local fetish night.

So...what do you do to prepare for an EVENT?

I've run the gamut from "just clearing my schedule" to "planning the plane tickets, transportation, hotel, making a packing list by outfit/time of day and creating schedules and notebooks for everyone going with me to coordinate"

I go with the flow and see how I feel.  I'll usually have an idea of activities I want to do, but if something else comes up, I do it.  If I'm just tired, I sleep.

...what do you do to recover from the EVENT?

I try to take a day off work before returning fully- otherwise I just get really angry at things.

Formal wear is always an excellent choice :)

FR ~

A couple of random thoughts from going to events and also having a past job that involved traveling:

- Clean your house and take out your garbage before you leave - its always an extra bummer coming home to a dirty and smelly house/apartment
- Hydrate and sleep during the event
- Don't go to the event with to many expectations (which is different than date/play/fuck plans you may have)
- Try to take the day off afterwards

LOL

You haven't been spying on me when I am told to organize our trips, have you????

I haven't gotten around to the notebooks yet since Tribal Fire is still a few weeks away, but the hotels are booked and we are driving not flying.  Packing list for the event is done and some of it is even packed.  The notebooks and schedule with be this weekend.

:) Sorry to miss you this time around, one of these days we'll plan right and make it.

I especially liked that I would pick out those folders with kittens on them- I loved the idea of walking around with a cute kitten folder to a class on fisting. Plus makes it a lot harder to lose among all that black.
