In what ways do you feel BDSM is being steryotyped in the media today?

I know that for instance, whenever there is a parody on a tv show or in a movie...the infamous "gimp" is refrenced.

But what other ways have you noticed?

Just curious.

Actually, I think we're gaining ground. Thanks to movies like "Secretary" and media coverage of some of the people involved with it, like "The Secret Lives of Women" for example, I think the attitudes are changing. Hell, even "Buffy" made a mention of the use of "safewords."

Sure, we're still showing up as serial killers and/or comic relief on various TV shows, but no where near as much as we used to. I still remember the episode of "Married With Children" where the Bundy's are on vacation in the UK, and end up at a dungeon space.

If anyone is out there actively demonizing us, it would have to be the televangilists. I hear them mention "perversion" on a regular basis. And footage from some of our Pridefest activities regularly shows up in their "scare grandma out of her SS check" propaganda films.

so many murderers and serial murderers on " cop " show are Sadists ..... it makes the stereotype more ingrained in peoples minds

One stereotype is that BDSMers like to inflict and receive pain and wear or utilize various types of restraints.

Oh, wait.  That's not a stereotype.

Yeah, I completely agree with you on that one Bipolarber. My Grandmother actually found out that I was into BDSM and accused me of not being Christian.

Fun times.

Actually, until about 5 years ago, everything that I had seen in the vanilla world regarding BDSM,
was always weird and negative.
Often, when someone is accused of a BDSM related crime, they will use terms like "dark and perverted sex acts", etc.
The media overall does not usually portray BDSM activities in a very positive light.

Don't worry your grandmother![:D]

I just watched "secretary" for the first time last night... got Alpha and I all hot and bothered! but one thing that bothered me was that she was portrayed as someone who already had a mental illness and that bdsm was an extension of that. Having been a cutter myself, I know that it's a lot more nuanced than that and the way the movie portrayed it was extremely well done, but to someone else who had never done anything like that, it might seem from watching that movie that cutting/depression=bdsm. Which is soo not always the case.  I'm glad there's more out there, even comic relief, because it gets people curious. I first discovered the wide world of BDSM while researching sociopaths, so maybe any publicity can be good publicity if the right (curious) people see it?
