How old is it? Because I'm wondering if it isn't overheating. Turn it off, let it cool down, open up the back and use a can of compressed air to blow out all the dust. If the fan's going bad, you'll need to change it.

Agree with Des. Most likely it's something a fan blade is hitting. You most likely have at least two fans. Make sure there isn't any dust in any of them. Also make sure you don't have a CD or DVD in the drive. Oh and quit doing things that get your computer all hot and bothered -- just bothered is OK.

It might be a tiny bit of something caught in the cooling fan,a piece of paper or something. There`s one on the processor too.

If you have pets, sometimes they get clogged with pet hair. Talking from experience here.

god, no kidding, Des.. I've gotta do a blowout at LEAST once a month.. preferably once a week. Love my girls but GAWD I wish they wouldnt shed so much!! even AFTER brushing.........

It is hard to diagnose with actually seeing/hearing what is going on but there are four possible causes I can think of... 1) Dirty or Failing Fan.. Open case, use can of air and a small brush to clean off blades, make sure power is unplugged before cleaning case power fans. 2) A wire or ribbon connector has shifted and is angled right to vibrate as fan air blows across it..like blowing on a taut blade of grass will produce a whistle. 3) A Hard drive is beginning to fail. Has the computer been hesitating or blue screening on you more than usual?Slower to start up? You may need to replace it. 4) CD/DVD Rom is beginning to fail. They can get out of true and dirty and because some do have moving parts can begin to rub. poenkitten (wishing you luck)

Is it a laptop or desktop. My laptop whistles simple because of the air it sucks in and the cat thinking its the perfect place to nap, or the cpus up so I assume It needs more air for the more of the cpu it uses. ( I are Blond) If its not hot then try blowing out the fans (as everyone suggested) If it still doesnt work or stop (and youve got a nice rack, and its a laptop) Low cut shirt go to a best buy or circuit city and flirt your way to it being fixed...
