Interesting article... I particularly liked this:

quote:

Individuals’ increase in norm compliance when punishment is possible exhibits a strong positive correlation with activations in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Definitely not me, then.

Kittin, this doesn't really apply to you and some others in this site does it?
You're "Left -Wing" not "Liberal."

Thanks for sticking the label on to me, poppy - I'm relieved I'm not a goddam commie-loving dope-smoking pinko liberal ;-p .

Leatherist -> RE: The Left-Wing/Right-Wing Brain Connection (4/10/2008 5:09:25 PM)

Moderate is sort of like being a gardener in the political world. You indentify the useful, and the parasitic. The parasitic draws down the useful, and so it gets pulled out by the roots and tossed in the compost bin to die.

The weeds tend not to like this, and they bitch a lot.  [;)]

Your metaphore's a bit drastic, isn't it [&:]?

Politically moderate people are necessary for balance and all that... I'll give you that...

It's just that they're so bloody boring [:D] .

Another link for right-wing dom CEO headcases. [&:]

Insanely long link.

If you are trying to make the argument that all CEOs are "right wing", and all CEO's are brain damaged, therefore all "right wingers" are brain damaged ... how the hell do you explain all the "left wing", "liberal" CEO's in the world? [:D]

You are guilty of selective perceptual bias, methinks.

Firm

Simple: they're lying, and aren't 'left-wing' at all - they're right-wing people in stealth.

popeye1250 -> RE: The Left-Wing/Right-Wing Brain Connection (4/10/2008 5:55:07 PM)

Kitten, if you keep proceeding to the "left" then at some point you'll be quoting Rush Limbaugh.

kittinSol -> RE: The Left-Wing/Right-Wing Brain Connection (4/10/2008 6:01:32 PM)

Rush Limbaugh, moi? Ridiculous! I don't have enough humour to turn into Rush Limbaugh, and you need one, to be a complete joke.

Kittin, sure you do, I laugh at you all the time!

orfunboi -> RE: The Left-Wing/Right-Wing Brain Connection (4/10/2008 6:06:36 PM)

I'm not one for studies. However from personal observation over the years, there are laid back and aggressive people on both sides.

kittinSol -> RE: The Left-Wing/Right-Wing Brain Connection (4/10/2008 6:09:14 PM)

You are completely correct, of course - but the research is amusing :-) .

It was excellent, but I had to go to the store and get some tomatos and parmesan and basil and olives and gummi bears.

xxblushesxx -> RE: The Left-Wing/Right-Wing Brain Connection (4/10/2008 6:40:02 PM)

Ok, so...all right winged conservative people are organized and stuff?

Huh...

Who knew?

All right, move over Hippie and Kitten, I have to become a left winged person because as much as I have tried (and been taught) I will Nevah be organized.

Kitten, you were just going for a laugh with this, right?

'Cause it was cute, but, there's really no reason for people who just happen to have differences in life theory to keep poking at each other all the time. [sm=poke.gif]  We really should try to learn how to get along and improve this world that we all live in, imo.  [sm=buddies.gif][sm=friends.gif]

Idk.

Hippie reminded me of this study published last autumn: it's amusing, enlightening, and infurating - it confirms something I have suspected for a long time, which is that Right-Wing individuals are more rigid, aggressively inclined, and better organised than their mellow, laidback, Left-Wing counterparts.

There was a similar study a while back that found that conservatives tend to prefer a top-down, authoritarian style in their leadership, while liberals tend to prefer a concensus-driven, egalitarian style.  If I recall correctly, the study also made connections with the fathering that those studied had experienced.  Those with more strict, authoritarian parents tended to respond more to that kind of attitude in their leaders and grow up more conservative while those with more permissive, nurturing parents tended to respond more to that kind of leadership and grow up more liberal.

That makes a lot of sense when you think about how the parties actually operate.  The R's are more effective at rallying the troops and more likely to punish anyone who steps out of line - they tend to shoot their wounded.  The D's are more effective at building concensus and more likely to pick each other apart publicly - they tend to form their firing squads in a circle.

I don't really trust either major party, but I worry less about seeing the D's in power because they're less effective in wielding power than the R's, and seem more concerned about appearing overbearing, less winner-take-all, which makes sense since they can't count on everyone from their own party toeing the line.  Since we're confined to two parties until they self-destruct under their own excesses, I prefer to have an R executive and a D legislature.  That makes it tough for either party to push through anything that's irretrievably stupid and generally makes for better governing.

TheHeretic -> RE: The Left-Wing/Right-Wing Brain Connection (4/10/2008 6:45:35 PM)

The definitions of "liberal" and "conservative" have become so muddied and screwed up over the last 30 odd years (that I can remember, anyway), trying to associate the terms with a neurological wiring diagram seems pretty masturbatory.  The individual perceptions of the author make it as useful as a stiff ball of kleenex that missed the trash.

The things that matter to me would be classified as "liberal" in most circles, but I generally reject the proposed methodology of the contemporary American Left in how we get there.  This apparently makes me a radical right-winger.  Where did the jump happen, that totalitarianism (or any other word for it) was the way to a society that promoted peace and the pursuit of individual happiness?
