i am wanting to make my own spreader bars.  Does Aanyone have a good site or willing to share how to do so?  i've been told its very simple to do.  One of my questions would be what kind of paint would be best to use?  Figured these would be simple toys this girl could start making before exploring other toys i am wanting to make.

Buy some wooden dowels at the home center and threaded eye bolts.  Cut the dowels to the desired lenghts and drill a pilot hole in each end a bit smaller than the eye bolt threads.  Screw in the eyes and you have a full set of spreader bars for hardly any money.

Find some old aluminum crutches in a thrift store. Take out the bolts holding the three parts together. The center part with the tip is what you want. Cut off the closed parts of the ends of this.

Find wood doweling that fits inside of the tubing snugly. Center drill it carefully-glue it inside with  epoxy. Glue threaded eyebolts into that. Make sure they line up properly-you have one chance to get it right. You now have a strong, lightweight adjustable spreader bar. Much better than a simple wooden one-and it will not split at the ends.

Look to see if there is a woodworking store in town as they often carry walnut and cherry dowels which make fine spreader bars.  As for splitting, if you properly drill it, there should be no problem.

We own two bars built like this.  Well I've never taken it apart so no idea if wood doweling is inside...but they are made from crutches.  Best spreader ever made.  Lightweight to carry around.  Heavyweight at the same time for use.  Adjustable to any size you want.

Dowel rods will work fine as stated before. Clamp teh ends in a vice before drilling and they should not split.

If you are more into metal, try some metal piping. You can find metal end caps for those as well. You can screw the eyebolts into the end caps and then fasten those to the pipe by either welding them or using something like JBWeld (metal glue) if you don't have access to welding equipment.

I like making them myself. Like mentioned above wood dowels from any home depot work nicely. And the wood can finished in paint or stain. For use with suspension i use 3 foot lengths of prethreaded black iron pipe. Then drill holes in End caps to put eye hooks through.

But for looks i like copper, and made some out of copper tubing and soldered endcaps on them. Polishing is a must to keep them shiney

Vad, Thanks for the complement. I got the idea of the copper spreaders , when i was trying to decide what to do with the extra coppper i had left over from the copper cage.

I f anyone makes a set of copper spreaders, i want to mention securing the eyebolts. Since the copper end caps need to be soldered on and won't come off easily, you don't want the nut(s) on the inside to loosen and fall off.  i recommend one nut on the outside  and double nutting on the inside, and after it is tight peen over the threads near the inside nuts, this way the nut(s) can't come off. And use the outside nut to tighten it if it ever loosens

As far as painting goes, for a finish that lasts well; Sand & primer the wood before you paint. For metal, usually just sanding before painting works ok. Acrylic or latex both adhere better to sanded surfaces even on wood.

hum,very interesting folks,but depending on where you live Harbor Freight is the BDSM play toy store. There is a plathera of useful fun items in that place. My one Mistress friend buys all of her items there.Scares the hell out of Her submissive husband he hates it when she goes shopping because she always brings something home that hurts really bad.Mostly something for a good mind fuck but to see the look on his face is priceless. I have use  large dowel rods,,closet rods and the like. I agree. drill holes for a "u" bolt to be attached at one end and at a good distance drill several properly spaced holes for the adjustment of the other "u" bolt. Sand and stain for a good pro look.
Copper is good and polishes up very nice.

I just took a few excess lengths of PVC, dropped a length of chain through the PVC and attached clips to the end of the chain. Does it work, absolutely. Could it look better, certainly.

   I used a simple adjustable chin-up bar. The type that expands to fit in a doorway, with rubber ends. An "O" ring at each end, just inside the rubber end piece, held on with a pipe clamp, filed so there are no sharp edges on the clamp. Then the clamp is covered with a few wraps of electrical tape. Works like a charm. It has some weight to it. I like that. Also, it's expandable, so she's as spread as I want her to be. And...If I decide to mount it in a doorway then secure her to it...she goes nowhere.
  Hmmmm....Actually, I need to make another so I have a perfect doorway spread-eagle.
