hum, very interesting folks, but depending on where you live Harbor Freight is the BDSM play toy store. There is a plathera of useful fun items in that place. My one Mistress friend buys all of her items there.Scares the hell out of Her submissive husband he hates it when she goes shopping because she always brings something home that hurts really bad.Mostly something for a good mind fuck but to see the look on his face is priceless. Have fun shopping...

But for looks i like copper, and made some out of copper tubing and soldered endcaps on them. Polishing is a must to keep them shiney

After polishing the copper spreader bars we made last year to a beautiful shine, we sprayed them with clear lacquer.  They have stayed wonderfully shiney.

The drilled dowel technique works well for non weight bearing spreader bars. One thing I do to keep the ends from splitting is to find a piece of copper or even better stainless steel tubing that fits snugly over the end of the dowel where you have drilled. Its best if the tube is tight enough to have to be pressed or hammered onto the dowel. You may have to shave down the ends of the dowel to get a snug fit.

i am wanting to make my own spreader bars. Does Aanyone have a good site or willing to share how to do so? i've been told its very simple to do. One of my questions would be what kind of paint would be best to use? Figured these would be simple toys this girl could start making before exploring other toys i am wanting to make.

Ahh, another project for Dom Depot (or sub depot). You can get  thick doweling an inch in diameter, and screw in eyebolts on the end. This is an inexpensive spreader bar that you could dyi in an afternoon.

I made this and we still use it. Good luck!

I realise this thread is about beat to death but I have had some very nice luck with some 1 inch PVC pipe (that I got for free off an old display at walmart) and, of course, some eye bolts and washers.  The genius here is that when Walmart gets rid of a cardboard stackbase (the ones int eh middle of the aisle) there is often some PVC pipe in the middle that is there to hold up walmarts "goal post" signs.  And if you time it right you can pick up free pipe cut in 2', 2.5', 3', sometimes larger lengths.
