"Sole surviving son denied health benefits post-Iraq"

By GARANCE BURKE, Associated Press Writer
Wed Apr 16, 6:39 PM ET

"FRESNO, Calif. - Forced to leave the combat zone after his two brothers died in the Iraq war, Army Spc. Jason Hubbard faced another battle once he returned home: The military cut off his family's health care, stopped his G.I. educational subsidies and wanted him to repay his sign-up bonus.

It wasn't until Hubbard petitioned his local congressman that he was able to restore some of his benefits.

Now that congressman, Rep. Devin Nunes, is leading an effort to pass a bill that would ensure basic benefits to all soldiers who are discharged under an Army policy governing sole surviving siblings and children of soldiers killed in combat. The rule is a holdover from World War II meant to protect the rights of service people who have lost a family member to war."

Boy, this Bush Admin. is a piece of shit to let something like this happen!
Veterans like this should be given whatever they need to carry on with their lives, not have to fight all over again!
But, we have two Border Patrol Agents in jail for doing their jobs.
You know, I think Bill Clinton is a scumbag and a lowlife but Bush is just as bad!
It's been a rough 16 years!

I'm going to go with Meatcleaver on this one. That soldier is idealogically unsound. He should have just taken one for the team and said nothing.

Some of these guys are surpassing expectations and actually coming back alive and with needs that have to be met. The utter gall of that confounds me!

Die, soldiers, die!!!

We need a bureaucracy like that one in charge of our health care. Boy, oh boy!

SugarMyChurro -> RE: "Sole surviving son denied health benefits post-Iraq" (4/17/2008 5:05:18 PM)

There's a difference between bureaucracy and lootocracy.

I assume you voted them in so your opinion doesn't count for much now does it?

Vendaval -> RE: "Sole surviving son denied health benefits post-Iraq" (4/17/2008 5:07:14 PM)

The lack of planning for the inevitable outcomes from death, injury and mental illness of our troops is a national disgrace.

Yeah, it's an utter shame that all those warm, caring democratic Presidents, and Congress's since WWII didn't change the law ...

Seems like the Bush Admin and the soldier both have to suffer from another Democratic failure to plan.  [8D]

I wholeheartedly agree.... I think serving a commander in cheif of the caliber of Bush /The Administration is an abosolute priviledge -  and those who have served should consider themselves to be very fortunate.....and shouldn't bitch. At the mention of any such administration official, that paticular serviceman should keep his eyes lowered to the ground and never speak until spoken to.

Whaaa??? You mean we now have to behave like the slave-peasants we really are too?

This is one oddball type case, a type of case (as FHKY pointed out) that the rules should have made an exception for long ago but has slipped through the cracks until now. It made the headlines for political reasons, I'm sure. It makes certain people feel really good about themselves, and allows them to beat their chests and say "see? see?"

But the far more common cases are people who are perfectly healthy when they leave the military and who use VA hospitals and myriad other benefits all their lives for free.

It made headlines because he didn't conveniently die like his brothers.

Would it help if I told you, I can't think of a republican president that I considered warm and caring either?
