" "These findings confirm the strong social influences on female adolescents in the U.S. to be thin, sometimes using unhealthy behaviors to achieve this goal," the researchers write in the current issue of the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

Research in the 1980s in female college students first suggested that disordered eating behavior spread through "social contagion," demonstrating that binge eating clustered within sororities, Dr. Valerie L. Forman-Hoffman and Cassie L. Cunningham of the VA Iowa City Health Care System note in their report."

It used to be that the behavior was mimed by college freshman (to combat the dreaded "freshman 15"?). THen it was noted in high schools. It seems to have missed middle schools but has hit thr grade schools. That is frightening.

Yet again...

http://medicine.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request=get-document&doi=10.1371/journal.pmed.0020124&ct=1&SESSID=cb8a2e9713a76f1efd3fde68ecaed48b

Don't believe anything until it has been repeatedly confirmed, through careful research and testing, by groups with either no, alternate, or opposing agendas.

This seems like a classic case of a study that could easily be following social bias.

You are most welcome, hisannabelle.  I had noticed this behavior among certain groups of young women, including two former roommates.
