Self Mastery, what does it mean to you ?

Can you claim to achieved it?

To know, and control, oneself.

I struggle with it, every day, can't say that I'll ever be where I want to be, but there is a level of self mastery that I can be content with, and I am ever wobbling in that direction.

If I learn how to master myself then I can never surprise myself, I don't want to master myself therefore.

If you master driving it is because you understand the limitations of the car. I can't think of myself as having such limitations.

It's always a pleasure to go against the flow.

For me, it means learning to “love” one’s self; my definition not the one found in a dictionary; truth, acceptance, respect, responsibility= love.

Love is when the wellbeing of another, is imperative to one’s own happiness. It works when applied to self, also.

It is a progressive work, not sure I’m there yet; but I continue to work towards it.

The ability to know and understand and control oneself.

Most of the time I do very well, every so often I have to go chill out in the woods or at the beach to regain inner balance.

IMO, a Dominant of any gender or orientation needs to achieve self-mastery before moving on to mastery of another.

to me, self-mastery is the control of all one's desires, those that are healthy and unhealthy.

have I achieved that?  hell no!  I am a work in progress, as always, perfect in my imperfections

I think Self Mastery is something we all strive for, I know I do.
How well I pull it off depends on the area of life it's touching on at the time.

I think it's a shame we expect a Dominant to be Self Mastered but make excuses for Sub's who are not.

A dominant should be proficient in self mastery, if they are to keep/tutor a submissive. As submissive should in their relationship learn self mastery

Good Point Aneirin.  I know I have always looked for a Dominant who excells where I fail.
Then strive to emulate his actions to better myself.  Yet, I think this is also an area where
the more self mastered a submissive is, the smaller the pool of Dominants become.
Eventually shifting submission into another relm.  Or at least I hope so.

To do what is important, rather than what I want to do.
To control my emotions, rather than be controlled by them.
To be a man of principles and integrity, and to hold onto them no matter what the external pressure
To remain calm in the face of adversity, and to view challenge as the rungs of the ladder to success.
But mostly to continue to strive to be a better man today than I was yesterday,
While always realizing that while I may never be the man I want to be
I am also not the man I once was.
To act, rather than say.

Hmm, if I wanted to self master, I wouldn't need a Master!

I am capable of achieving it, but I thrive when I am Mastered, instead.

Self mastery, to me, means being self aware, self confident, self disciplined, and self directed.  I'm probably missing big elements but that's what comes to mind off the top.

Nice but improbable. As I see it self-mastery is mastery over our desires and animal impulses. That includes sexual desires and desires to control others too. And without such desires we would not be interested in the lifestyle. So though it is normal for a Dom to be more self-controlled and „in charge“ something I would call being „proficient in self mastery“ would by definition include getting over BDSM desires as well.
