Black and White TV (Under age 40? You won't understand.) You could hardly see for all the snow, Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go. Pull a chair up to the TV set, My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning. My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice-pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli. Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then. The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system. We all took gym, not PE . and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries, but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now. Flunking gym was not an option, even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym. Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after schoo l caught all sorts of negative attention. We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything. I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself. I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations. Oh yeah ... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed! We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat. We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got butt spanked again when we got home. I recall the kid from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front step, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck. To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that? We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

Everybody with even half a brain knows that Health and Safety and Social Inclusivity "experts" have screwed things up. This is not humour it is serious.

god. .. so true living in a house with 4 other brothers .. remember the flying shoes and the pulling out the belt? never heard of calling the cops on your parents.

not over 40 but I was there for some of it and the parents follow the saying of spare the rod spoil the child.

Last summer one of my 12 year old neighborhood kids used a broom stick to write his and his girl friends name in 3 foot letters inside of a heart with an arrow in the wet cement of another neighbors new drive way, and was seen doing it by his own father and the owner of the driveway. The kids father promptly hauled the kid into the house and used his hand to spank the little bratts behind. 20 minutes later the cops arested the father for child abuse, after spending 8 days in jail because another neighbor reported hearing a child screaming and the father couldnt afford the 85,000.00 bailbond untill relitives could raise it for him. In the mean time the police ordered the owner of the driveway not to touch his own driveway or disturb the "EVIDENCE" so it dried with the ragged drawing in the wet cement. Then to top it off,after his release from jail my neighbor was handed a bill for $1,839.00 for removal and replacement of the damaged driveway. Moral of story? Unless you plan to gag your kid or have a sound proof room to do it in these days, it is a lot cheaper and safer to spoil the kid and let em get away with damn near anything!

Unless you plan to gag your kid or have a sound proof room to do it in these days, it is a lot cheaper and safer to spoil the kid and let em get away with damn near anything! ok.. thats jsut wrong.. the kid deserved to be smacked... i can see drawing a lil heart or something but he ruined the entier drive.... if i had done that id have expected to get my ass beat and then to be grounded. child services need to back off in a lot of cases and worry about the kids who r being starved cuz they didnt get an A on a paper or get locked in there room every night so mommy and daddy can go out and have fun. H >:)

And THIS is exactly what is wrong with America. I remember being whipped with a Belt in Safe-way from the back all the way out the store and THAT wasn't a BIG DEAL..... It happened a few time before to other kids while I was there. Yes Child Abuse is a Horrible Thing but I believe that allowing a child to run a muck because you are afraid to correct or discipline your child is NEGLECT and our country Promotes Neglect and likes to lable people who aren't, Child Abusers. If you wanna know WHY this has happened Ask your Neighbors what they think of thier Neighbors Parenting skills and THEY WILL HAVE AN ANSWER, There was a time that it wasn't anyones business but THIER OWN. Todays Youth (Which I am NOT far removed from) Makes Me SICK, I think Parents everywhere should be Beaten everytime thier children fuck up maybe then they would start being parents. Steel

Did someone say they do anger management here, "Oh! do tell more". And maybe some of that team building, along with couple counseling, that would do nicely as well. May be I should talk to the management about it and if they say "No", just go for the throat and sue them. Maybe we all should say No to the cotton wool age and enjoy life.

At least Tonka Trucks were never made "child safe" as far as i know. You can still burn yourself grabbing one that's been sitting out in the sun, cut yourself on the rusty edge of a really old one, and beat your friend bloody with it for not sharing.

there's a piece that goes something like this ... when i was a child i slept in a leadbased pained cot, went swimming without sunscreen, road my pushpike to my friends house with no stack hat, or shoes, we climbed trees, picked each other's scabs from the gravel rash, and compared scabs and scars to see who was the tougher ... and so it went on .. i obviously had a very unsafe childhood ... might explain me today !
