Just for edification:

Forbidden grains are oats, spelt, barley, rye, and wheat, and depending on how closely you wanna watch it, millet.

The problem with explaining Passover is that it is a pretty complicated holiday, and unfortunately the usual Internet sources (Wikipedia, Judaism 101, etc.) tend to overcomplicate the explanations.  I found this brief lesson plan which gives some basics.  An excellent, traditional explanation of just about EVERYTHING related to the holiday is here.  Its also a really nicely done website.

Actually, bat shalom, you are giving only partial information.  If you follow Ashkenazic (Eastern European) tradition, there are a whole lot of "grains" not allowed:  Orthodox Jews following this tradition will not eat rice, corn, soy beans, string beans, peas, lentils, mustard, sesame seeds and poppy seeds during Passover.  In Sephardic (Spanish) tradition, all of these are allowed, and in fact there are several traditional Passover dishes using rice or corn.  Quinoa and other "new world" grains are not specifically forbidden in the Torah, but they generally are not allowed.  Also, the forbidden grains may NOT be forbidden if the time between the contact of the grain with water and before baking is strictly controlled (no more than 18 minutes) so the grain (notably wheat) cannot begin to generate self-rising gases.  You mentioned that re: Matzoh, but it is true of other foods, too.

To those who celebrate, Happy Passover, chag samayach and L'Shana Habaya B'Yehrushalim.  To everyone else, share in this holiday of family and remembrance.

E.

Whats for dinner, and who cooked? (ie did you cook, or was it your sub/slave/sir/maam/mom)

my answer for tonight I cooked T-bones (mid rare) steamed broccoli and a teriyaki rice a roni

I went to Ruths Chris Steakhouse with friends.  Had mushrooms stuffed with crab for appetizer, petite filet (medium rare), au gratin potatoes, and sauteed spinach, we shared a bottle of Orsi-Papale La Mescalanza, and we shared chocolate explosion cake for dessert with cappuccino.

We all came here afterwards to watch a movie and plan our vacation.  Incredible night with awesome friends.

Tonight will be steaks on the grill, home made macaroni salad (that reminds me, I need to hardboil the eggs yet), brewed iced tea, and brownies for dessert.

Because the whole of it, as you said, is far too complicated. I was speaking of my traditions in my house. We also eat bitter herbs here. ~shrug~ It's impossible to go into all the traditions and all the explanations.

Anything that could potentially be fermented could potentially be forbidden, which has always made me wonder about potatoes and why they were not forbidden. And the whole wine thing cracks me up. It is a celebration full of contradictions (and I love it partly because of that reason).

Oh, Emperor, I am not Jewish. Aba celebrated Passover, mostly in respect to his parents and to my ancestors, great-grandparents and back; thus, I also celebrated Passover. Even though I no longer have a beautiful Israeli Aba, I still maintain the traditions as they were taught to me by the man I thought so much of (and do still).
