sunshinemiss -> Why do you like the USA? (4/20/2008 6:08:03 PM)

Hey there everybody,

As many know, I'm moving back to the good ole US of A.  I've been living abroad for almost 2 and a half years with a couple lil stops back to visit family and friends.

I'm really really nervous about coming back, and could use some positives.  The last time I was back, I saw a culture of fear and blame.  Help me see the beauty...please.

Awww, sunshine.  There are so many wonderful things that this country has to offer and I know that spending wonderful time abroad can make things seem a bit fuzzy, but the US is a great place.  As in living overseas, people have preconceived notions about foreign countries.  We know from living overseas that things are not always as they seem.  It's the same when coming home, sweetie.  Give yourself some adjustment time.

Hugs,
DRH   =)

sunny... beaches, mountains, plains....all within one geographic border.  no border checks to cross from one state to another ;)  WIDE range of weather, even within one state.  People who do NOT carry the culture of fear, and will say hello to complete strangers on the street.
ME!!!

LOL

*smooch* doll, like DRH said.. give yourself time to reacclimate :)

The people, the potential to live the life of your dreams....

New Orleans, New York, Hollywood, Chicago....

More things to do than you can fit into a lifetime....

Or just find the perfect small town, and chill.....

there is so much to love about our country...it has tremendous beauty and kind, wonderful people...it's always the negative that gets the attention, but there plenty of positives, if you just look.

freedom to pick up and go from one coast to the other without getting stopped and needing your "papers" at every border.  the freedom to say what you want and debate that point without worrying about the thought police breaking the door down at 3am.  freedom to belong to CM, a church or synagogue, the local labor union, political party, book club, whatever.   the freedom to leave, the freedom to come home.  got to admit, there's alot to offer here, you just have to open up and find it.

in Gr people say hi to total strangers. there's pantries for the needy. cool safe places for teens to go. always changing weather. a place where a welfare mom with 3 kids found work , went to school and now makes pretty good money in a job she loves. and we love our military.

GT says it succently.  There are good people and places throughout the states.  You can find the good, but you will have to look for it.  As for the culture of fear, I believe that is perpetuated by TV.  If it bleeds, it leads.  Turn off the TV, and get to know PEOPLE.

When my cousin returned from living in Norway, She was overwhelmed for a time but she soon got used to it.  Although the first time she went grocery shopping it blew her mind on all the varieties to choose from.  Be well.  It's ok to be nervous.  [;)]

Thank you for the reminder!!! I need to go to the grocery store and take pix of all the food I STILL don't recognize. lol.

Dragon -
I have come home several times and it just jangles my nerves.  The fear thing was for example... I wanted my friends to download skype (which is owned by ebay and paypal company) so that we could talk for free by computer, and they WOULDN'T do it.  "what if it has a virus"?  You have virus protection.  What if it takes up too much space.... Let's check hwo much space you have.  What if I don't like it.  Delete it.  The fear, fear fear...

That's what I meant by culture of fear... not just what's on tv.  And the blame - the road rage, the "don't bother me" attitude at the store (I want to give you my money for crying out loud!)... that's what I remember.  And INSURANCE... a perpetuator of fear.

Sorry to go off like that... it just shows you all what worries me.  It's not that other places are perfect, they are just different.  And honestly I haven't really liked Korea... So, sigh.... tell me more happy things, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

peace
sunshine
