What did you expect from his visit, did he fulfilled your expectations or even exceeded it? Are you disappointed and if so, why? I for example was quite surprised and pleased he adressed the abuse so empathically, a thing JP II never did.

I caught glimpses of the holy appearance on the television news. I thought it was appalling, sad, pathetic, disgraceful, frightening, scary. A leftover from a bygone age, I heard the resounding sounds of the monotone litany of mass. The popemobile, grotesque reminder of the opiate-like power of religion. The high cheering crowd waving little flags at the direction of this man who is supposed to incarnate humility and devotion at the feet of god, and who ends up representing a corrupt, antiquated institution that is rich beyond belief. It horrified me...

Well if I may be candid? He should butt out of US affairs. The church is as top heavy as government. Meanwhile tax dollars spent on his visit. [same money could go to food bank] [that] church TAKES from the person. that is my opinion.

A professor I had in college had a theory that the reason people turn to religion is simply because they are terrified of their own demise. They are afraid of what they face when they die. So people give power to a god, a symbol, or a person in a powerful position and put belief into that instrument in order to protect them from the inevitable. It is difficult for most people to invision that when you die, it's over. It is much easier to believe we all have a soul and when we die, we all float up to heaven and live forever in the arms of god. It suppresses the fear of death. When a loved one dies, we like to think they are still living in heaven. Kind of helps explain why so many people will willingly support dictatorship. And the dictator can gain a lot of power in this fashion if it is employed in a certain way. Perhaps this is how Nazism and fascism become so popular after World War I in economically hurt and war-torn areas of Europe. It creates a vicious cycle. Because it is easy then for this power to control the masses and target threats. Homosexuals are evil. Jews are evil, etc... And public will follow that lead and adopt those beliefs. You wonder if after 9/11....how far would people be willing to go to have their safety guranteed?

There are certainly a lot of theories about why people "turn to religion". Few of them apply to many people, and none are universal, simply because practically everyone has a different reason. I've always been struck by how many of them tend to belittle the people they address.

The most funny thing about the popes visit to the US in the UK was the fact it over shadowed PM Gordon Brown's visit and that was hilarious. The PR organisation of Labour Inc. isn't like it used to be, very bad planning.[:D]

He is a caretaker PM not very dynamic and has drawn the short straw of poor economic conditions that no man alone can solve.

Yes it was agreed he'd follow Blair but then he said there might me an election to give him peoples vote of confidence. However then he realised they had none so he carried on in Government saying he was going to prove to the people he can do the job so that they can elect him after he has proven he can do it. UK democracy very complicated.[8\|]
