Owing to meeting the demands of the surge and other factors associated withthe war in Iraq, the US Army increased the number of recruits enlisted despite being convicted felons.

quote:

The felons accepted into the army and marines included 87 soldiers convicted of assault or maiming, 130 convicted of non-marijuana drug offences, seven convicted of making terrorist threats, and two convicted of indecent behaviour with a child. Waivers were also granted to 500 burglars and thieves, 19 arsonists and 9 sex offenders.

Slightly facetious sentiment; only it has come to my attention that “red flags” are no longer a viable means of communicating a warning, amongst my fellow citizens.

It appears we have graduated to requiring a "flare up the ass".

In coming!!!

Great...like they didn't have enough sexual abuse going on without allowing ACTUAL sex offenders in the ranks.  Interesting...aren't these the same people that WON'T allow openly gay personnel to serve???? SOME people.....

To be fair, perhaps there is a sort of twisted genius in sending child molesters to get blown up in Iraq...

This is nothing new.  We use to get people from prison when I first enlisted in the United States Army back in the 1970s.  Sometimes being in the military can straighten out some people who come out of prison to serve, but not all of them.

FR:

A little perspective:

The Army recruits 80,000 new soldiers a year.

The total number of felon waivers the Army granted last year?  511.

For you math wizards out there, that's a whopping 0.0063875 percent.

what irks me is that I'd kinda like to enlist.  Granted, I'm in noway able to serve in a combat position, but there's plenty of other things I could do...
the problem?
I'm too old.

what she said.

and greedytop...you are not the only one! well, it's not because i'm chronologically too far gone, it's just my body's a few years ahead of me, thus i'd probably be more of a liability than an asset. and i only briefly considered the army - more of a navy girl meself, but it was my dream for a long time. (p.s. i haven't forgotten about your message, recovering from school, will message you tomorrowish, sorry!)

Get off that brain and let it get some oxygen.

Nobody in their right mind would enlist unless they have nowhere else to go.

Remember I said in their right mind.

I think those freaking out about such stories forget that not so long ago, service was offered by the courts as an alternative to jail.

I don't think it's such a bad idea. I'm sure they don't get just 'turned loose' upon entry. If they revert to old ways or become a significant risk, they will be discovered just the same, if not more easily than if they had no record prior to service.

Edited to add: Let's not forget also that in some states, taking a whiz outside and being seen by a cop is grounds for being listed as a sex offender.

I don't know why people make such a big deal out of this.  Judges used to give young criminals a choice between prison or the Army.  I remember a veteran of the Korean War giving a speech at the 50th anniversary talking about how many of the guys in his platoon were murderers, thieves, and brawlers of the worst sort.  But he added, "And they were magnificent bastards."

I think it's a hell of a lot better to let these guys join than it is to let them remain unemployed on the streets.  Idle hands are the devil's playground as they say.

There are several questions to be pondered here concerning the recruits with felony records.

How long ago did the offense occur?
How long have they been on parole?

Are they currently involved in criminal activities?
Are they repeat offenders?

I was also surprised at certain types of offenses being "waived".

"According to the data released Monday, a bit more than half of the Army's 511 convictions in 2007 were for various types of thefts, ranging from burglaries to bad checks and stolen cars. Another 130 were for drug offenses."

These type of offenses are of less concern than those listed below.

"The remainder, however, included two in 2007 for manslaughter, compared to one in 2006; five for sexual crimes (which can include rape, incest or sexual assaults) compared to two in 2006; and three for negligent or vehicular homicide, compared to two in 2006. Two received waivers for terrorist threats including bomb threats in 2007, compared to one in 2006."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24243460/page/2/

Would you want yourself or a family member/friend serving with a person with that kind of criminal record?

I guess my distaste for the idea could come from the fact that I live in a tourist state; where visitors from other states, often come to use, and abuse the natural resources, and then leave their trash behind, where ever it may be convenient for them to do so.

Something about that just seems extremely irresponsible to me.
