CBS) The Department of Veterans Affairs came under fire again Monday, this time in California federal court where its facing a national lawsuit by veterans rights groups accusing the agency of not doing enough to stem a looming mental health crisis among veterans. As part of the lawsuit, internal emails raise questions as to whether top officials deliberately deceived the American public about the number of veterans attempting and committing suicide. CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian reports.

"This is disgraceful. This is a crime against our nation, our nation's veterans," Filner told CBS News. "They do not want to come to grips with the reality, with the truth."

It seems to me, they have come to grips with reality, and are quite comfortable with it.

It is the people they do not want coming to grips with it; but hey, it seems to be what the people want also.

I am not sure which angers me more.  The pretense that there is no problem or the collective amnesia.

More smoke and mirrors for an administration that wants to keep it's political objectives going until the bitter end.

I'm curious, if you were to cook for yourself in your home and were distracted by the news and burnt your supper would that to be smoke and mirrors by Bush in a personal attempt to ruin your country kitchen.

It's not always the President at fault here. Get -past your agenda, the VA could be finacially liable for tons if this is attributed openly to combat, those from past wars would all the sudden see a check and what about the families that now have lost those to suicide. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ That's what the VA seen, and I doubt they consulted W on this.

The first thing America has to do is acknowledge problems for where they are. W isn't always the bad guy. He has his faults no doubt, but here you go again Leatherist with the administration crap. Unless of course you meant the Veterans Administration.

One thing for sure is known and has been known for a long long time, combat fucks up soldier's minds. Suicide amongst soldiers that have experienced combat is extremely high compared to others in their generation. Putting on a uniform doesn't insulate someone from having their head fucked over by the stress and experience of war.

How come compensating veterans can cost too much but fighting an illegal war that costs trillions of dollars doesn't cost too much?

Ok I am not defending the VA, but is this someting new? I don't think so---vets committed suicide during the Revolution, the Civil War--after WW1, WW2 and Vietnam---this isn't something new--and sadly something that has never been addressed----

Our military, active and retired, are getting screwed.  It's not JUST the administration's fault, but this article does make some very valid statements.

health issues, be they physical or emotional, are not new. Look at the fight the VietNam vets have to go through for recognition of the damage done to them by Agent Orange.

I keep seeing people saying, “This is nothing new”, which completely baffles me.

Perhaps the question isn’t “is this new”, but “When is it going to be enough”?

I am not surprised at the treatment our veteran's have received from the VA.  The whole military medical system needs to be addressed and overhauled.  Do you know that there are doctors in the military that flunked OUT of medical school?  That they do not have to be board certified in the states that they practice in?  I have stories from being active duty and reserve that would curl your hair!  Once someone told me that I was lucky to get "free" medical care from the service.....my response was you get what you pay for!  I went to a doctor for a sinus infection, and the idiot told me to lean over the table while he dug under my ribcage to "feel" my liver.  Then he wanted to admit me for tests.....he tried to tell me my liver was dangerously inflamed.  I HAD A FREAKIN' SINUS INFECTION!!!!!!  Medical personnel in Germany were responsible for my miscarriage of my first child.

The quality of care received by our military personnel would NEVER be acceptable by civilians.  We're talking malpractice issues and lawsuits that would make every lawyer in the country Forbes 500 members.  Active duty personnel are unable to sue the doctors, medical personnel or the services themselves for any mistakes made.  Dependents they treat a little more carefully, because they can sue.  Unfortunately, I have no pat answers to solve the problem, the VA seems to have adopted a very cavalier attitude about the treatment of our soldiers which seems to be totally acceptable to the powers that be in DC.  Personally, I think the VA should be taken right out of the picture....give our soldiers private health care, from qualified personnel.  But that will never happen.

No expense spared, from the people.
