Can one give a general overview as to what material of rope works best for bondage games?

Here is a bit from my The Loving Dominant. (This is copyrighted so I’m asking people not to repost)

Rope is cheaper and inherently more versatile. Sisal or manila rope is rough and stiff. Some submissives like the harsh touch of these materials, and some dominants enjoy manilla's ability to hold knots without jamming. Both, however, have to be handled carefully because they can cause severe rope burns. Polyethylene rope, the yellow stuff that floats, is stiff and hard to handle as is mountain-climbing rope which consists of a core of nylon lines inside a jacket of woven nylon.

Before the ghost of my father, a Merchant Marine Officer, descends to crack me alongside the head and yell, "Your talking about LINE, son!" I'll admit that what seafarers call rope is more suitable for fastening the QE2 to a dock than a submissive to a table. However, rope is what most people call it. Sorry, dad.

Perhaps the best all-around material for bondage is plaited cotton rope. Cotton rope used to be used primarily to hold sash weights in windows and for clothes lines. With the passing of sash weights and the use of non-rotting nylon for clothes line, cotton rope largely disappeared. The modern version has a plastic stiffener inside which renders it inappropriate for use in bondage. However, some pure cotton rope is still available, and those who have been able to obtain it swear by the material and guard their supply with care. A number of these lucky individuals report buying theirs at a magicians' supply store.

if your just starting out use braided nylon it's soft and flexable

Nicely broken hemp rope is my favourite. It holds a knot well, very low stretch and is low friction as in chafing the skin. I also can have a nice smell (kinda like fresh mowed hay) when you work it.

hemp rope is nice but good hemp is expensive

I know somebody went into really good detail about this on another older thread, but I'm too lazy to pull it up at the moment. Maybe I'll do it in the morning. For now, I'll just give you this link, which explains a bit about the different kinds as well as offering it (and many other things) for sale.

Depends on the game you want...there's nylon, there's cotton, there's hemp, there's rubber, there's embroidery floss, there's ribbon, of all different shapes and makes.

Figure out the game you want to play, and that will help determine what substance will suit you best. How important is the touch? Sturdiness? Smell? Flexibility? Endurance?

My pick = poly for wet and messy play / cotton for detective bondage / flax for japanese bondage

That is probably rayon.

I agree that the texture and color are nice, but of the little bit of it that I have, it has too much surfact tooth to be real good for erotic bondage.

Another plus for it is that it will sometimes come with tassles already on the end (used for curtian tiebacks). For folks that dont want to bother with finishing the ends of their rope this makes a nice alternitive.

The serious bondage enthusiasts (in our neck of the woods at any rate) usually use processed hemp rope.

You can use nylon rope as well, however the knots tend to slip on themselves far more than with hemp and it is slightly stretchy. Many find is more aesthically pleasing than hemp.

My toybag used to contain a wide variety of rope materials, then I got some hemp. Now my rope bag contains only hemp rope and a couple dozen foot of parachute cord.

Everybody I know who's tried hemp now use it exclusively. I say, try all the different materials and find what you like. Or save some money, and just start out with hemp. Prepared hemp is really nice.

Might be off topic of sorts, but I prefer silk neck ties to tie my subs and slaves up with.Less chance of burning or marking the skin!

NickInSLC -> RE: Rope Material. (10/22/2005 3:52:55 PM)

And where might one find flax? I'm interested in trying it out. No matter how good it is, I won't be switching whole hog immediately. I currently have around several hundred dollars worth of hemp rope. But it'll wear out eventually.
