Wow, the APA lead by taking it out of their diagnosis lists first? *boggle*
Nice to know that part of my country has their heads on straight.

I know this is 10 years old.  What inspired the post is that in my conversations about the paraphilia list*.  I noticed many people weren't aware the APA modified the criteria for sadism and masochism in the DSM IV or that it wasn't "abnormal" as of 1994 when "consensual sadomasochistic behavior" was no longer considered a disorder.

In those conversations about S&M being normal, I also learned sited many did not know in 1995, Denmark became the first country to completely remove sadomasochism from its classification of diseases.

In 2011 when the APA releases DSM V, sexual sadism and sexual masochism (not just consensual sadomasochistic behavior) should join the ranks of homosexuality in that it will have been removed from the DSM as one of the 8 recognised paraphilias.

That would be very nice, indeed.

10 years old, but still good info. I was arguing with someone at a munch just this past week who kept on demanding that 'psychritisits still consider BDSM a mental ilness' and I keep trying to say that it had been removed from the DMS-IV ages ago. (By the way, the link to KAP they give was the old race bannon link. KAP is now being run by NCSF)

When the topic comes about my sexual sadism, I like to tease people and say that I only have until 2011 to be a pervert when it will be removed from the DSM entirely.

Why argue when you know you are right?  Just prove it..either they listen or they don't.  Its their ignorance, not yours.

Cause I didnt have a copu of dsm-iv on me at the time .....

I realy wish there was a kink version of snopes.com that woudl debunk all this. That way whenever someone tries to sprout off such nonsense like 'South carolinia just pased a law making kissing iliegal' or 'The atorny general is trying to force mandatory life setences on anyone who comits adultry' or 'The state legestature of alabama is trying to make a law againt being naked in your own home' you could just direct the idiot to the website.

Now that is a step in the right direction. I can't say i'm surprised though, Denmark is after all the coolest, most fantastic country in the world.

I remember in college, about 5 years ago, arguing with a psychology professor that in order for something to be a disorder it had to be actually harming themselves or others and/or getting in the way of normal life activities.  I contended that consensual sadism or masochism did not meet this criteria and he disagreed with me.  I guess my point is that, despite the DSM being revised, some psychologists remain biased.  Nice to know that even at the time the DSM agreed with me, though my profesor didn't.

Guess we have always been a liberal country. Rarely you'll find a country with a 19 year old female with nose piercings in the Parliament. Not that I agree with with her party nor Yvonne's party. It's all good that minorities have a ways of being heard. As far a s I remember is Yvonne a lesbian and I respect her opinions and her actions as Minister of Health.

Denmark was also the first country to legalize pornography i 1967. And now DK is starting to allow women to be topless in public swimming pools, makes sense as you'll see nekkid women at the beaches and in city park. Just gotta enjoy the sun the few month you can....

Your professor didn't because no doubt he was old school.  Whenever someone in the scene asks for a psychiatrist who is kink aware...I tell them to find a younger doctor.  It's hard to change old habits even if the proof is there.  Yet, when not taught those old habits to begin with...nothing to change.
Anyway...all therapists are kink aware, some may just not be so friendly.  Find a young one.
