Did you know that the word "Eureka" is Greek for "I have found it" and that the exclaimation traces back to the Greek scholar Archimedes, who is said to have shouted it while running through the streets of Syracuse naked? The history behind that incident is believed to be tied to the solution of a problem posed by Hiero of Syracuse, who wanted to find a way to determine the purity of an irregular golden crown. They had ways to determine weight, but Archimedes (while stepping into the bath.) stumbled upon a way to determine volume. Water displacement. The story first appears in written form in a Roman treatise on architecture some two centuries later.
