They argued he should get only probation, because all three convictions were misdemeanors and the actor had no previous criminal record.

The sentencing lasted the entire morning without a decision. A jury found Snipes guilty in February of willfully failing to file taxes for three years, in which the government said he owed $2.7 million.

The actor's attorneys said the government's sentencing guidelines weren't fair for tax convictions like his. They wanted him let off with no prison and no fine.

Jail should be reserved for violent offenders - I don't know the intricacies of the Snipes story, but three years in jail is seriously stiff.

No wonder America has the largest inmates population in the world (what was it again? One percent of the population behind bars?).

Yeah, I can think of better ways of handling this; hell, make him pay what he owes, and a fine, and put his popularity to work somehow ala community service.

It's unfortunate that Snipes got mixed up with fraudsters but he did break the law, incite others to break the law and attempted to defraud the US government. Maybe this will give pause to the next guy who starts reading the BS the tax evaders put out.

Hmm... too bad the case played out as it appears to have been. I found myself hoping that he had been communicating with Sherry Peel Jackson, and decided to move forward with her ideas.

I've never heard of Eddie Ray Kahn before now. I'll have to see what tax position/argument he used to convince Snipes not to pay taxes.

Jackson's BS is pretty standard tax evader BS. Snipes spouted roughly the same crap and got 3 years with his co-conspirators getting 5 and 10 years.

From what I could find real fast it looks like Jackson will be doing hard time herself real soon.

The tax system is voluntary... even the tax commisioners have said so. The problem rises when you try to argue in court the issues within the tax code or even the legality of the tax code. There is no law on the books that states we have to pay income taxes.... period!  Therefore you do not argue if it is legal, you do not argue the code... you argue jurisdiction and only jurisdiction. Because the IRS doesn't have any jurisdiction over a Natural Born American that is not a 16th amendment citizen.

I guess that Jackson may be doing time soon, but don't agree that she should.

The PTB has long ignored numerous requests to show us what law requires us to pay taxes on money we earn within the United States.

Of course, if we find ourselves in their courtrooms, playing by their rules, and being forced to put up with their refusal to show us the law, we'll often lose. But not always:

He actually was aquitted of the most serious charges. It could have been much worse.
I just don't understand why there isn't more of an outcry over the IRS. Just as the people did when President Bush and Congress tried to ramrod that dopey "amnesty" immigration bill through a few months ago, a huge public outcry would get the politicians to finally seriously take on the IRS. But that is probably too much to ask for from a populace that more and more depends on big government.

The law that requires that income earned in the US is taxable: USC 26. Arguments to the contrary are specious.

The income tax is voluntary just not the way Kindandcruel claimed. The legal sense in which the income tax is voluntary is that is not a distraint system. IOW every January the IRS does not seize all your assets in order to make you file a return. Arguments on this issue are clearly derived from rip off artists who were counting on their victims not knowing legal jargon.

The natural born citizen vs. 16th ammendment citizen seems to be a misquote of the specious natural born citizen v the 14th ammendment citizen argument. The argument seems to be that people born outside of military bases and DC are citizens of the individual states and only those born in federal enclaves are US citizens as defined by teh 14th ammendment. However this is another argument that seems built on the suckers not actually doing the research because the very first sentence of the 14th is:

Which seems pretty clear cut to both me and all courts that have heard the argument

Please people actually look into the claims these hucksters make. You shouldn't have to suffer so these scumbags can enrich themselves selling you books/videos or tickets to seminars.

As a long time avid vampire fan..I can honestly say I'm shocked. I think his sentencing was too harsh. & I hope he will be out alot sooner. A shame to see such a fine actor locked away for far too long. I wish him safety there till he gets out. I hear they were going to make one more Blade movie the way he wanted it done, not how the directors did and screwed him over. ( Knows the whole truth behind all the "Blade" movies on how they were done wrong.)
