I don't have the original news story since it broke more than a month ago. But I did find responses that the story generated. Here is the background: Current is an alternative weekly in Newfoundland, Canada and its September cover photo showed the mayor of St Johns ballgagged with an expression of fear or surprise. (His photo is below.)

A local newspaper asked Joyce Hancock, the President of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, what she thought of the photo. Hancock accused Current and Mayor Andy Wells of mocking, trivializing, and minimizing the issue of violence against women.

quote:

I found Ms. Hancock’s offhand equation of ball gags with rape inexcusable, and I expect more of a woman in her position than mindless regurgitation of incorrect stereotypes about an already-marginalized population. <snip>“Yes, it's true: sometimes violent criminals use bondage to hurt people. Just like sometimes they use intercourse to hurt people. But if [these women] think that sexy, loving, consensual bondage is a bad thing because criminals engage in dehumanizing, cruel, nonconsensual bondage then, logically, they should consider all intercourse bad too… <snip> Even more troubling than Hancock’s seeming ignorance of the character of consensual sadomasochistic play is the potential that her comments have to discredit the feminist community itself. <snip> By stirring unnecessary controversy, she’s perpetuating not only ridiculous stereotypes about kinky people but also the unfortunate stereotype that the women’s movement is a sensationalistic crusade against anything that could ever be potentially offensive to women.

Yeah. This realy pisses me off how these right wing christian consertives try and block anything that they think is .....

..... oops .....

.....feminist? Ok, then nevermind. We all know that its only the folks on the right who are the enemy and the ones on the left our are friends.

One comment made is symbolic to our own way of life...

quote:

there are still groups <snip> who can't grasp the fact that bondage play doesn't have to be degrading <snip>

The depictions of BDSM acts are becoming more mainstream yet they often portray us in a less than flattering manner. Many sub-groups are able to voice their grievances about being portrayed in ways that they feel infringe upon their civil rights, but the world is no where near ready to extend the BDSM crowd with any civil rights in regards to our way of life.

Ummmmm... nope, I wouldn't say the feminist are our friends either. They often insist that the male dom/fem sub roles are degrading to females & pigeonhole them into archaic ways of thinking of men rule the world.

Hey.

I'm a feminist and darned proud of it.

There are multiple types of feminism just as there are multiple topics of any other social or political movement.

This woman that the story interviewed sounds like Dworkin (cultural) feminist. They tend to be very anti-sex and anti-erotica; anti-anything heterosexual too. They also tend to seem women anywhere there is "negatives" or "weakness" shown which to me shows their own sexism.

I mean, the mayor in question is male, correct? So how exactly is this a comment on anything to do with women? Why isn't it about violence against men? Or censorship? Or legal cases? Or the stupidity of the ad agency?

Answer: it shows this Joyce Hancock's view of the world, not the world's view of bondage, women or anything else.

If I remember, wasent it Dworkin who pused through a law in Indiana that made all porn a civil rights violation againt women? ..... I still never have figured out how male-on-male gay porn can be a civil rights violation againt women but the law got pushed through somehow or another.

I'm quite confidient that others on this site have met a number of folks that would qualify, in some way or another, as a feminist. I personally believe that gender shouldn't be an issue in any job including the combat arms for those that choose that field. Both genders have members that have proved themselves capable of achieving greatness, over and over, in most career fields. Shamefully, I have to admit failure as a professional gigilo, but, I'll continue striving for that lofty pursuit. weg
Finding an estheticially pleasing countenance and/or body form on a female doesn't disqualify her from being an activist-feminsit... She's probably been pawed enough by the good ol' boys club and refuses to be a victim any longer. Others wage battle over the inequitys of wage disparity, while another gritches 'n' gripes over not being allowed command of a platoon or company of combatants.
Sheesh, what was the question?! lol
