Knowing that I am a tightwad, that I want the most for the money;

What fans do you employ- or plan to; what works and to what extent. What to avoid.

I never liked ceiling  fans. I thought they were ugly, and afraid they would fall.  [every so often CRASH - a shelf I install collapses...lol]

3 rooms had a ceiling fan when I bought my house.  I love them.  The 9 other rooms, at least 2 should have them.

Central air is  $4000.00 to install. I would not use it since I cut down on electric use.  I can run 6 fans for 1 AC.   I have a small window unit. They are lighter, quieter; $100 these days.  I did reconfigure the new window- [1st floor pine room] so the unit is near the top, not at waiste level.

-oh-  awnings can be good- tho most are ugly.  they cost an arm and a leg!!!

as a kid we had a whole house fan, it was loud but worked.  in 10 minutes it expelled the hot air- bringing in cooler air.

Show me what works - anything that helps keep the house cool.

Thanks!!!  :-)

Roger,
Go to Home Depot or whatever you have there.  Look into whole house fans.  Then pay to have the person they employ install it for you.  You should be able to get one totally installed for around 300-350.

Years ago on a very hot summer day when I was looking at property to purchase in Oklahoma City.  We went into a house...on a sweltering day with the humidity.  The realtor pulled down the little chain hanging from the ceiling and such a gust of cool air came out.  WORTH THE MONEY.
I've wanted to install one in every house I've owned since.  The whole house fan with the addition of your ceiling fans and the house should stay much cooler.
Just make sure you get a fan for the right size of your house.  Ask the dude at the  hardware store.

It isn't going to be like central air but it will cool you down.

My home has two ceiling fans.  One in the kitchen, one in my bedroom.  I love them.

we have celing fans in serveral main rooms as well as ac units that will be back in place as it gets warmer.but for now using the celing fans and one floor fan and that seems to be enough for now.

my 11 yr old bumped the ac unit we had in storage and somehow put a hole in one of the freon lines with something that poked into the side.  there went a three yr old 10,000btu unit that cooled the whole downstairs of my house.  looks like it's fans for us this year, just hope it doesn't get too hot!
