Aneirin -> Armed service life (4/25/2008 11:26:19 AM)

I was just wondering, well reminiscing about my past in the armed forces, the life I lead there and so came to wondering about how service life effects those who have been in the armed forces and are engaged now in the BDSM lifestyle.

The service life in the armed forces is very well structured with a definite hierachy, where it just becomes second nature to submit to the orders of a superior. Now, me thinking this I was wondering how many people come out of the services and seek a submissive role with their partner, possibly because it feels comfortable, what they are used to.

Has anyone any ideas on this, are there any ex service people here who would own up to their BDSM role and do they think their institutionalised service training has contributed to their current desires ?

Not ex, but I happen to have one who is current.

Service live has nothing to do with this. Draftees just wanted to get thru the service. Most who join don't have any job prospects avaliable. There are those who use the schooling to help when they leave the service (Doctors-Nurses). Pilots are in a class by themselves. The disipline part you put up with if you have to. You can scam or bypass most of it.

One of my favorite slaves was ex military.
Her time in the military helped in slavery a great deal.

I have to disagree with you about service life, we do not have a draft system in place, it being a professional service where people join for the career aspects, Towing the line leads to promotion, dodging leads nowhere.

You apparently were in a very different military from me and all the folks I've known well.

And no, my military time had no effects on my interest in BDSM -increasing, reducing, what area of interest, personal orientation, nothing.

Nor has it for my spouse, who is still in.

What really gets folks to join the military? Our reason was this, $. Money for college, a slight sence of job security in an else wise scary economy. Insurance for His needs and mine. A need to serve does not enter the picture for everyone.

Some join with a feeling of duty. Dominate folk can feel duty and responcibilty. Obeying a superior in the military is the same as listening to a civilian boss or a police officer directing traffic.

Yes, you can be a submissive in the military, you can also be dominate, switchy, plain ole kinky, or straight vanillia.

Aneirin -> RE: Armed service life (4/25/2008 3:30:03 PM)

There is a difference, in civillian life one can tell your boss to FO without much happening, do the same in the military, it carries far more weight. Jankers is not funny or nice.

all the Dominants i have had has been in the armed forces and i love it. my father was in the Navy and my brother and when they got out they were different in a good way, strong, confident, disciplined.but my question is all the Marines i have ever been with my Daddy included is an extreme sadist. Don't get me wrong here he doesn't like to talk about his days in the Marines ( Desert storm) but God what a sadist.

I met my first dom while serving in the military.  I even had more rank than he did.

Hmm, wonder what that means?  I'd say the military had zero bearing on anything with the
lifestyle for us.

People are people, and organizations are organizations.  The British military did away with floggings and keelhaulings for insubordination a long time ago. They do have a vested interest in developing and maintaining 'unit cohesion', but that doesn't always call for mindless submission.

If someone feels that the only way to get ahead is to act submissively, then they will behave accordingly, in the military or in other organizations.

If someone feels that they should think for themselves, even to the point of bucking the system, the military is pretty buckable.

beautyImurDaddy -> RE: Armed service life (4/26/2008 6:11:41 AM)

ImurDaddy is current military and overseas as we speak..  The one thing the military has taught him is how to tie GREAT knots (hes Navy) but other than that... it has allowed him to explore different cultures and their various BDSM subcultures and how they are similar or different from those in the states.  And we have come to adopt many of the in our daily life. As far as the military itself, and how much it contributes to influencing the lifestyle.... well... surprisingly... i have seen an overwhelming number of military who are submissive.  This could probably be attributed to the same phenomena as corporate CEOs paying a Mistress/Dominant.  They are forced to make decisions all day every day.. and wish to allow someone else to do that for them.  On the reverse... they are so comfortable and it comes so natural to be in a position of leadership... it carries over into their personal and professional lives.

IronBear -> RE: Armed service life (4/26/2008 6:53:24 AM)

Actually, most of my friends and associates (including my current peer group and many of my Gorean Peer group when I was part of the Gorean Lifestyle were military and mostly Special Forces). Being an Ex Special Forces Officer in two armies (Australian and US Army, all I can say is that the military disciplines and hierarchy simply reinforced the disciplines and hierarchal structure I was brought up in at home, Boarding School and with my late Sensei. . Nothing to do with BDSM other than perhaps new ways to efficiently immobilize with out necessarily killing or damaging my target.

Did I join up through lack of jobs or education? No. I had careers I could have taken and had a classical education. I joined because I believed it was what I should do and it was expected for me to attain a military background and perhaps even promotions (This was way before 'nam).

sslaveO -> RE: Armed service life (4/29/2008 11:47:02 PM)

It is funny.. not to derail this thread.. but just to throw in that when I was a child, I used to watch the television show Private Benjamin and boy did that allure to me. There was something very secretly fascinating to me about the privates having to obey Captain Lewis.  I very secretly thought about joining the army for YEARS just because of this.

Watching documentaries on tv about basic training, however, have made me glad I never did and I think the experience of armed military life is a tiny bit similiar to D/s as far as the structure and obedience aspect but a big difference is the sheer stress levels of military training and life.

Dnomyar -> RE: Armed service life (4/30/2008 4:37:35 AM)

Op I think that you will find that millitary service in the US is different from that in the UK.
