cyberdude611 -> Scalia says "get over it" in regards to 2000 election (4/25/2008 1:47:11 PM)

On CBS's 60 Minutes, Justice Antonin Scalia said in regards to the 2000 election recount to "get over it."

"I say nonsense," Scalia responds to Stahl’s observation that people say the Supreme Court’s decision in Gore v. Bush was based on politics and not justice. "Get over it. It’s so old by now. The principal issue in the case, whether the scheme that the Florida Supreme Court had put together violated the federal Constitution, that wasn’t even close. The vote was seven to two," he says, referring to the Supreme Court’s decision that the Supreme Court of Florida’s method for recounting ballots was unconstitutional.

"It was Al Gore who made it a judicial question…. We didn’t go looking for trouble. It was he who said, 'I want this to be decided by the courts,'" says Scalia. "What are we supposed to say -- 'Not important enough?'" he jokes.

considering the fact that we can't get back the last 8 yrs, i agree, we should concentrate on making sure it never happens again.  expend your energies on something that can make a difference, not something you can't get back.

I, for one, will never "get over it ". Does Nino suggest we should  also get over such injustice as "hanging fruit" and the Holocost as well ? What nonsense and arrogance ! But, they have gotten away with it, haven't they ? Shame on us.

Scalia is basically spot on. Gore was the one who chose the path of litigation. He just didn't figure on getting out lawyered in the process.

Gore tried to get cute with the recounts and it backfired on him. It was foolish, stupid, and very likely unnecessary--a full statewide recount would have given him the votes, the election, and the courts would never have gotten involved.

While both sides did some shitty things, I think it was the Dems that drove the process into the ditch, mostly.

Best thing we can do is shitcan the electoral college, the voting machines, anything even remotely resembling a chad, and go from there.

I disagree with doing away with the electoral college. Without the electoral college, Florida 2000 might have been replayed in several states, with an electoral mess being the end result.

As untidy as the outcome of the 2000 election was, it was a lot tidier than it would have been without the electoral college.

I never in my entire life seen such soar "winners"

anyone on the board could have determined how a voter intended to vote.

get over it- is a way of saying- it will happen again.so deal with it.

i dont think the left will be as nice,  as "next time"

Huh?

Sweet suffering Jesus on a popsicle stick ! I will put a sock in it before M11 feels a need to do it for me, again. There is simply no point in debating issues with people who take their freedoms so casually, imho.

celticlord, I suggest you do a thorough Google search on this topic, inform yourself , and put that obviously good mind to use, sir.

You can be sure that what you don't hold dear and value, you will lose.

I suggest you not assume I am not already fully informed.

Fine. Then I retract my former assumption that you have an obviously fine mind.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Scalia says "get over it" in regards to 2000 election (4/25/2008 4:36:40 PM)

Florida had an election....they had recount after recount after recount and each one had Bush winning. Gore however kept wanting to recount until he somehow got a lead. They recounted the same votes so many times that chads were falling out of the ballots. And it came down to a pannel of 3 people per county going vote by vote trying to judge voter intent. It was a silent coup in progress by the Democratic party and the Florida Supreme Court. The US court saw what was going on and put a stop to it.

Now you can make all the noise you want about the purge of convicted felons purged from the voter roles. But the Democrats didn't have any problem when Katherine Harris did that until after the election. Then all of a sudden it was a grand conspiracy. The Democratic party also APPROVED of the butterfly ballot. In fact it was designed by a GORE supporter! True, a whole bunch of stupid old folks (mostly snowbirds from New England who should not have even been voting in Florida anyway since they only live there 4 months out of the year) got screwed up and voted for Buchannon instead of Gore. But guess what....they are shit out of luck. It's no one's fault but their own.

So where is the conspiracy? The only conspiracy was Democrats who were trying to change election results.

As you wish....assumptions are dangerous things under the best of circumstances.

Well, we agree on something, cl. I'll leave it at that.

DomKen -> RE: Scalia says "get over it" in regards to 2000 election (4/25/2008 5:51:28 PM)

I will once again point out that every major organization that investigate dthe matter found that once even a reasonable attempt was made to count the votes of everyone who legally came to the polls to vote in FL in 2000 Gore won. Not by a few votes but several thousand. The only way to argue otherwise is to accept the intentional and illegal disenfranchisement of tens of thousands of legal voters.

Scalia needs to get used to being one of the people that destroyed the SCOTUS's credibility.

And you what the true irony is with all this?? The Democratic party in 2008 declared Florida's delegates illegitimate and disenfranchised the whole state.

Democracy? HA!

Well said Panther...but I still have to say....as a REPUBLICAN!!!!!....Bush stole the election...and Gore won the popular vote.

I'll never understand the electoral college thing...and I haven't voted since.

domiguy -> RE: Scalia says "get over it" in regards to 2000 election (4/25/2008 6:31:58 PM)

It has become a political body....Voting along party lines. Scalia is a joke....He spends "personal" time with Cheney...They are above the law and they no longer give a fuck about perceived impropriety. It is simply the way of the world.

You are really .... REALLY have to come up with some quality links to this assertion, DomKen.  Moveon.org and DailyKOS are not reliable sources.
