There was a time in history when the above strategy was appropriate. When the majority of people needed to change the way they thought about segregation. The majority shared the responsibility for that oppression. This is not the case today… this is not about racism… two of the three officers were black. Most white…black…red and yellow know that the actions of the officers were tragically wrong, grossly excessive, and negligent. They also know that justice was not served. BUT When you” close the city down” especially one as large as New York… people will die. Blocking roads can stop emergency vehicles as an example. I can see protest against city offices and the police department…but I can’t see putting people’s lives in danger for Al Sharpton’s political gain. If this happens there will be a backlash from the average citizen that for now agrees with the family of the man killed. What Sharpton should be doing is providing a good lawyer for the family and demanding the government look into prosecuting the civil rights violation. Then soothing racial tensions instead of inciting them. Butch

I'm guessing nothing would move till the situation was resolved. We should be outraged....Cities across this Country regularly pay millions out in settlements and law suits yet rarely is anything done to these "outlaw cops." Shit, Are cities are going broke but "we" allow this type of messed up shit to continue unchecked. Remember how pissed off ya all were when the OJ Simpson verdict was handed down? I can only imagine that many Black Americans feel that same severe dissappoinment for a corrupted system...Why not close down a city that seemingly routinely guns down your fellow unarmed Americans?

domiguy... it does happen to white people.... and when it does where is big Al then? A white guy was shot and killed in Bridgeton here in Missouri for pulling a cell phone... The cops shot many rounds two of which ended up in my bosses kitchen. Guess what... Al Sharpton did not come to town to shut it down...why not?... maybe because the guy was white. A cop blocked a kids car he was chasing him for speeding in a drive way... then when the kid put it in park and the car jerked... he pulled his gun and killed him… he was white… where was Al sharpton? Police have problems... we all know that. The police in New York need to change... but not by killing innocents. And not by turning it into a black white issue. Butch

I'm not a big fan of Sharpton, he's a grandstander and too often, a big mouth, but this case doesn't smell very good. How many shots were fired? Quite a few.... Now, two of the three officers are black, so, if the finger of racism is going to be pointed, it'll have to aim at the system, and/or the Judge.

It's a tough call... Cops respond to cases involving Blacks different than Whites. Obviously there is a rush to judgment...Is it justified? Maybe it is maybe it's not. It sucks to think that because the police feel that all blacks are gun toting assholes that folks like Amadou Diallo are executed. So whether it is racially inclined or enforced through personal experience...All I know is that it sucks... So New Yorkers can expect millions of dollars to be paid out to the victim's families in this case...Who cares? Business as usual. The city is going broke and since it doesn't concern white folks aside from paying higher taxes nothing will ever change.

There is a huge difference between alluding the police or being pulled over for speeding and shot fifty times outside of your door...Or a club and unarmed. I googled "NYC cops shoot unarmed man" You mean to tell me that if NYC cops shoot a white dude it doesn't make the paper in NYC? Ridiculous notion... Butch, if I went and googled city by city..."cops shoot unarmed man" what do you think that the percentage of those killed would be white? I'm guessing 1-2% if that...It rarely happens. Why would AL give a fuck about white people?....What you should be asking yourself is why don't white folks seem to care when black folks are getting gun downed?....Fuck, it's a two way street. Why do we expect a black man to be the defender of whites? How do we reciprocate? There are a ton of problems on both sides of the coin....But these guys are unarmed and shot fifty fucking times...WTF?

They look at a department protecting their own beyond justice...but not as a black white issue... But as you say it is most likely perceived by minorities in a different way. Butch

To be fair, I think the case itself and Sharpton's involvement are two different issues entirely. The problem we face here is a criminal standard of conduct issue, as well; the "beyond a reasonable doubt" statue is quite difficult to prove if we interpret it consistently (which we do not, but we should). I cannot say I would be displeased if these men were found criminally innocent but guilty in a civil court, with a lower standard of proof, as I'm relatively sure they fucked up big time, but not over 98% certain, from what I've read.

Domiguy; two of the cops that were involved were black, one was middle eastern, one was biracial (hispanic/Hatian), and one was white. I don't think race had anything to do with this. If you read about the incident, Sean Bell and his buddies left a strip club after reportedly threatening to get a gun. Of course his pals dispute this, but of course they would. Bell and his buddies had all been arrested previously on firearms possession charges, and Bell had been arrested twice for dealing drugs. These guys were not angels, and I believe that they probably were running their mouths as they left the club. I believe they said "Yo, get my gun." which was what the undercover officer heard them say. The undercover officer ordered Bell to stop, but he gunned his car instead and crashed into a police van. Well a car is a deadly weapon, and the police are justified in protecting themselves. BAC tests showed that Bell was beyond the legal limit. Of course, Sharpton has witnesses that dispute all of this. But Sharpton made cash payments to all of these people. Sharpton is a professional race baiter. He makes a living off of the race issue, so it's in his best interest to find racism when there often is none. Yeah, blacks are more often than not the people you hear about in these types of incidents. But that's because blacks tend to live in high crime areas. In the end, this is a tragedy. But Bell and his buddies are ultimately the cause of it. When you run your mouth and make threats about guns, you are asking for trouble. Well trouble found them that night.

Sharpton will recall that one now needs to be in a "free speech zone" in order to protest. Organizing a riot, organizing to "shut down" a major city, probably isnt legal. Dont forget we now have secret laws. Police science is a tough line of work. The police are not paid well for what they do. We need them, as if all police stopped "serving" only the mightiest would exist. There is a ton of violence in the world- it could be benificial to adress that. The court process ruled "not guilty" not guilty does not mean "innocent", it means the legal requirements have not been met. Sharpton makes the cause WORSE by involving himself. It reduces a serious issue into a pep rally.

I wonder if those cops were "Affirmative Action" appointees? They had the same problems in Boston, they had to send most of the Affirmative Action cops to Northeastern U. for remedial reading and writing courses because,...they couldn't read and write very well. The Boston Herald's Howie Carr brought that o the light of day after he was urged to "hush up" the story. Also, a lot of those "AA" cops are now in prison for killing people, pushing drugs and other crimes. And the Firefighters who were "appointed" under that program are no better. Last year one of them was killed in a fire and they found crack cocaine in his system. A year or so ago one killed his girlfriend in Fla then took a leap from her 9th floor balcony. "Can't read and write and have criminal tendencies?" "We can sweep that under the carpet, sign right here, we'll make you a cop!" They've been caught drunk and high on duty. That's Kennedy Country for you! And the worst part about that whole mess was that they bypassed Military Veterans who applied for those jobs, what a fucking insult to the guys many of whom were just getting back from Vietnam and could read or write! As God is my witness, if there is ever anything I can do to damage the State of Massachusetts I will not hesitate!
