Ok i think i have held out long enough and the rumors seem like they maybe true from sony  they say metal gear is going to hit the stores with the nes PS3 80 gig system in july .Do i really need the 80 gig ?
can anyone tell me how  backwards compatable are the PS3 players in playing PS2 games ?
is the 80 gig worth waiting til july for ?
Thanks  gamers for the 411 .any help will help me decide .

I think its actually the old 60 gig ones that rocked backwards compatibility, but, at least in my opinion, if ya really miss PS2 games then you probably own a PS2, so whats the point?

The real advantage in the 80 gig is if ya wanna download a lot of video/music/whatever

Ok, here's the dilemma with your question: It depends on what you play. If MGS is all you care about, you're fine without the extra memory. However, the PS3 is reportedly getting more and more games that require LOTS of hard drive space in order to play. Some require almost an 'install' of sorts in order to make the game run. Typically these are RPG games, but I might have heard of one or two other instances when it was the case, though I can't be certain.

As for the backwards compatibility, the other poster was right, that ship has pretty much sailed for you. All of the new PS3s that are coming out under their new price ranges are abandoning the backwards compatibility aspect, not that they ever were truly backwards compatible anyway. When the system first came out, many had trouble making their PS2 games work and the company head basically gave an answer like "So?"

So no you don't need lots of memory as it's only important depending on the types of games you're into. "Most" will not require lots of space....but some will require LOTS of space. It just depends. As for backwards compatibility.....keeping your PS2 is your best bet if you still want to play those games.

If you don't yet have an HDTV, the blu-ray question is another 'dilemma' for you. The question becomes - do you want to one day have to 'replace' your movies with blu-ray when you 'do' get an HDTV or does that not matter?

At this moment for you, blu-ray is essentially worthless since you won't see much of a difference on a regular TV. However, as the world continues merrily turning, you may find yourself owning an HDTV and have only regular DVDs to watch on it. And that, from what I hear, is a problem. Sure the regular DVDs work on an HDTV, but I hear they look like crap.

I used to have a collection of over 250 movies on DVD and then sold them because A) at the time I needed the money and B) I wasn't about to spend the money to replace them with blu-ray when the time came.

Ahhh....you haven't been shopping for an HD set recently I see. You can actually get a respectable 42" flat screen for less than a grand now. Of course if you want the 'monster' DLP TV, you're still going to shell out almost $2K.

There are three main categories of HD sets. You have:

Plasma -- original type of HD and formerly the most expensive (not to mention formerly 'bad' for gamers as the screan burn-in rate was horrible);

LCD -- the second type on the market and the cheapest (also least breakable since there's no plasma 'tube');

and DLP -- the final and now most expensive, only due to newness on the market

The advantages to the LCD of course is the cheap price, but it should be noted there are 'some people,' myself included, who see an abundance of digitzation on an LCD screen. In other words to this select group of people the picture doesn't appear as sharp as it should be. Odd that I don't get this from computer flat screens, but I seem to on the TV sets.

The plasma 'used to' be the worst for gaming, but that was in the early days, now their main disadvantage seems to remain the nature of the screen and how fragile it can be.

The DLP, for those gamers with the weird eyes, seems to be the best of both worlds, but it's just so expensive right now. Regardless, when I 'upgrade' it will be to DLP, unless I find a nice LCD that doesn't have the weird digitization in my eyes. I won't be getting plasma because I'm paranoid about spending that kinda cash on something that is rumored to be 'fragile.'

If your eyes are 'normal,' you can probably get a nice-sized LCD for far less than you though originally.
