Yes...even though they may call themselves gentle dentists and do everything to alleviate the pain before, during and after, they are still SADISTs. Have you looked at a dental bill and broken it down by hours spent working on the teeth? They are better paid than most Surgeons!!!

Dentist 4 year college + 4 year dental school  +4 More if they decide to specialize total 12 years average 97,036 first year practice. You spend maybe an hour with the dentist for that per trip.

Surgeon 4 year college + 4 year medical school + Internship w/surgical rotations, +Resident/w Surgical Rotations + specialization for a total of 14-15 years starts around $226000 (lowest) first year in practice and not a resident. Residents average $54K and start paying off the student loans...If they are not going to incur more going for a specialty.
You may spend 10 minutes with the surgeon before surgery and up-wards of 10 hours with him if he cuts, THEN he earns more than the dentist, but that is a long time on his feet and he may be doing back to back surgeries in some delicate areas.

yes, evil dentist. of course, I just got back from having my wisdom teeth removed....but still! pain, blood, wires, tools with sharp edges....sounds pretty much like a sadist to me...now, for more painkillers, I wish I liked pain more

*unless* they get even another medical degree and they decide to teach...
Then, well...you know what's happening in education lately...

Many moons ago I used to work in a dental office and we had a joke between us all. All dentists are sadists, particularly when they give you your bill.

I guess its true because I am a sadist.

Are dentists sadists?  Some might be in their private life but, as a profession, NO.  If they were, why would they bother with trying to numb the mouth before they work on it or, make an effort to ease the pain of their patients or, try to make their patients comfortable, while they are working on their teeth?  Wouldn't they rather see the poor victims, i mean patients, suffering and in agony?

If you have ever had a bad toothache, a broken tooth, or some other dental problem, and went to the dentist to take care of it, then you know just how much relief they provide.  Sure, it's not a lot of fun while you're sitting in the chair, with your mouth stretched open and all sorts of power tools being used on your teeth.  But, when it's done and your mouth is free from pain, you can't help but feel that the dentist is a miracle worker.

I don't think so. I read a statistic many years ago that said that dentists had the highest suicide rate (at that time) among all professionals presumably because so many of their patients hate to see them.

Nope Nope  they are not and neither are the assistants  ..  *winks*  being a assistant for over 10 years and having had the lovely experiance of a sadistic dentist I know the differance  ..  unfortunatly I dont see folks till they are in pain  and not the good kind either   so while perhaps they are in to pain in private none that I know are in to it in the office  and if folks (not everyone mind you ) didnt wait till they were dying in pain  (ok so I exagerate a bit *s*)  to go to the dentist then  it would be such a  awful experiance  .. I became a assistant because I wanted to help folks in pain and I think that most dentists do as well

I agree with you ~ for this masochist, a dentist visit brings on an entire day of wet anticipation until I get to sit in the chair and open wide ... sigh

No.  My grandfather, father, and several of my father's friends are dentists.  They all do their best to make patients comfortable.  My father also does general anesthesia in a hospital if he can't give enough in the office.

OTOH, he's a retired Army Colonel.  Command comes naturally, so dominance might run in my family.

LOL I love the dentist, too.

The most sadistic thing my dentist did was to tell me not to drink coffee for a few days leading up to a procedure, and then when I was helpless in the chair, he sat next to me with a wonderfully aromatic cup of java, waved it slowly under my nose and said, "MmmmmmmmmMMMMmmmmmm....."

I called him a bastard for that.

my grandfather was a dentist.. an army dentist at that..  I have no knowledge of any relation to that, though...  my grandmother was neurotic, she tortured herself.   The whole Jewish guilt thing.

It's seeming to be awfully common among Mormons, though...

My school dentist may have been asian but I'm convinced he was either a protege of Doctor Mengle or was trained by the SS in forms of diabolical torture!
