girl4you2 -> quoting in posts-is permission required ? (10/14/2005 8:25:53 PM)

i've only been around these parts for about 2 months, but from what i've gathered, to post and use a quote in your response seems fairly typical. i've now just gotten an email from someone who tells me that i have to ask permission before quoting one of their posts. it wasn't a kind tone of note. what say all of you fellow message board posters on this new stick in the wheel of continuing knowledge? i will welcome all thoughts and opinions. i kinda thought the boards were a place to learn and share. if there are more who feel as the person who emailed me, am i (and the rest of the posters) to find the time to email every responder before adding to the discussion?

Nope, not necessary. Quoting is standard procedure on this board as it is on every other message board I paprticipate on. I mean, I didn't ask a Moderator before replying, but I have never heard of asking permission just to pull a quote from a forum post.

It is absolutely legit to quote someone who makes a post to a board. Just make sure to include context. That isn't necessary, just a courtesy to the quotee.

thank you; from what i read of the information posted by the moderators, there was nothing about not quoting others (in context only makes sense, as we're here to learn). thank you for the affirmation. does this mean i've your permission to post your quote for real? : ) thank you again.

Personally I use quotes because it allows me to specify who and exactly what I am responding to - it assists communication.

I am fairly certain many people here will tell you that this person telling you you have to ask permission is....um...misguided. I mean does this person own you (if they do then yeh, I'd say you had best ask them ;-)???

Frankly I'd probably have a little chuckle before I deleted their little nastygram to me.

Now that I think about it I might even reply to them saying it is their responsibilty to add after every post they make to add this line (or similar): "You may not quote any of what I have just posted for the whole world to see. I own it, it's mine, it's my precious."

If said person wants to get into copyright laws well they may have a leg to stand on in which case, I believe, all you have to do is not quote them in their entirety - I'm sure the local lawyers here will have more insight on that than me.

I think they are testing you (but then I am overly suspicious of people from time to time).

thank you for your thoughts. while i will sometimes cut a quote down in length, i do keep the context or else it would not benefit anyone. in this particular case, i'd quoted word for word with credit given. i suppose it takes all kinds, but freedom of speech is kinda a thing with me.

DesertRat -> RE: quoting in posts-is permission required ? (10/14/2005 8:45:21 PM)

I rarely say anything quoteworthy, but feel free. ;-)

OscarHargraves -> RE: quoting in posts-is permission required ? (10/14/2005 8:46:02 PM)

Quoting is SOP here (Standard Operating Procedure) and done daily. Whoever this person is they are not familiar with the boards or they just want to harrass you without good reason. Tell them to Buzz off. If they don't want to be quoted then don't write anything here.

JustaTop -> RE: quoting in posts-is permission required ? (10/14/2005 8:50:57 PM)

Quoting is fine.. But taking words out of context, and stringing them together in such a manner as to attempt to make them say something different than the source quoted ACTUALLY said is just plain rude.

Or highlighting one sentence totally out of context,and blowing it all out of proportion.

We are all intelligent enough to see that these games are being played-all we have to do is look back to the post they were extracted from.

happypervert -> RE: quoting in posts-is permission required ? (10/14/2005 8:54:43 PM)

Sounds like somebody said something dumb and then got their panties in a twist that you repeated it because then they couldn't edit the record of it away. The liklihood of a scenario like that seems high to me because sending that note wasn't very smart either.

You may quote me if you like.

that's pretty much what i do, too. it keeps things clear and opens communications.

i did smile a bit thinking of where he got his idea

i think you have something there. i just may forward that on, with your permission of course ; ).

thank you. i've no idea why this person sent said email. i've been posting on these boards for a while, and do my utmost to keep things in context, to learn, to share what i know, and to get to know people and all of their varying views. i play to continue.

I would say that if you are quoting to respond to a post within that thread, no permission is needed, if you are taking the quote into other threads, boards or lists, then yes, I would ask first.

It sounds like you met someone on a day they got out of bed on the wrong side, or they have a pickle firmly lodged somewhere unpleasant.

FLButtSlut -> RE: quoting in posts-is permission required ? (10/14/2005 9:18:29 PM)

I would have written back and told them that if they didn't want to be quoted they should never have posted.

As for the copyright stuff, unless you are trying to pass off their words as your own, there isn't an issue. Furthermore, this is an open, free message board where posting within the boards copyright would not apply. Posting off of these boards could potentially cause some problems, but again, if you don't want to have your words ever used against you, keep your mouth shut.

It's late so I don't feel like looking up chapter and verse, but there is an exemption in copyright law for a person who is commenting on another's text, which is exactly what is going on here.

kimmypuss -> RE: quoting in posts-is permission required ? (10/14/2005 9:43:48 PM)

I think whoever emailed the OP is out to lunch.

referring to another person's quotes is called faircomment.

Often one needs to quote to show what it is you are responding to.

I suppose if you do use actual word, not the quote box, maybe put them with quote marks and say So-and-so- said.

But really - this is a Public board . If you think your words are too precious, or steal-able - don't post.
huh?

ModeratorEleven -> RE: quoting in posts-is permission required ? (10/14/2005 11:18:27 PM)

No, it's not necessary to obtain permission before quoting a forum post. Ignore the person who sent that email.
