What is it to be masculine in this modern post patriachal world ?

What defines masculine ?

batshalom -> RE: Masculine ? (5/3/2008 5:18:17 AM)

Masculinity, to me, is a man who is happy being a man, being the generally stronger, faster, hairier, more dominant gender.

I don't know if this is the dictionary's version, but whatever it is, I like it a lot.  Nice!

Oxford English Dictionary:

Masculine in 2008: the will and ability to charm ladies of naive proportions into your home as a pre-requisite to loading them into the oven and proceeding to feast on them with like-minded friends.

Edited to add:

Collins English Dictionary:

Masculine in 2008: a sadistic maniac masquerading as a charming gentleman.

Unknown dictionary:

Masculine in 2008: a colossal pervert who will do anything to anything........usually employed in the Church.

How do you mean, 'post patriarchal'?

Masculinity is overrated. It's too easy to equate it with chest thumping and macho posturing. Masculinity is the smell of leather and soap. A lovely voice and a hard on.

FC, a pigmy horse in the deepest, darkest rain forests of South America, cut off from the rest of the world and lacking basic sanitation and electrical equipment, understands that it is equipped with a pair of bollocks.

Are you, or are you not, the proud owner of a pair?........have they dropped?

FullCircle -> RE: Masculine ? (5/3/2008 6:00:51 AM)

~way way WAY too tickled at this, sophomoric sense of humor and all~

NG, when you don't have a question answered, do you tend to ask it more loudly the next time ('cause that's how it's happening in my head.)

PS Pygmy horses usually have sanitation devices?

In the event a pygmy horse can't have a decent trough to enjoy, where's the parity in life?

This doesn't work for me because its not true in so many cases.

To the OP, to me masculine means a man who is comfortable in his own skin, living his life as he see's fit and not fitting into the tiny mold society would try to force them through.

What defines masculine ?

It is a form of energy.  Stereotypical masculinity, perhaps.  Certainly strength and self-reliance are a part of that.  Machoness can occasionally be a side-effect, as can a bent towards gallantry and dominance.  And it has absolutely nothing to do with being biologically male.  I've known plenty of biologically female people in my time, many of whom identify as male, who are extremely masculine, moreso than most men I know.

It's a frame of mind.  It's a way of being.  You don't have to be male to be masculine and you don't have to be masculine to be male.

charmdpetKeira -> RE: Masculine ? (5/3/2008 6:42:03 PM)

Masculine is physical; one that holds a steady pace. Its actions are as sure as the rising of the tides, and often, just as subtle.

In a state of rage, it is like the relentless winds and torrential rains of the hurricane.

Stand in its way, and it will most likely take you out.
