Really?  He only talks in the ones with Bugs Bunny.  I laugh everytime I hear that line, "Wile E. Coyote....supergenius."  Bar none, he was always my favorite loony toons character.  Everytime I hear or see a coyote, I think of Wiley strapping on an Acme rocket.

I'm right there with you on that, Quiv.  I'm going to say the lack of common sense goes a lot higher than the nanny, though.  This little city park sits right next to Chino Hills State Park.  Who dreamed up the idea of putting a public playground on the edge of wilderness?  Who thought it was completely ok to have bushes and landscaping that would provide concealment to a carnivore checking out the smorgasboard?  People without any comprehension of the nature of nature, would be my guess.  Pollyannas and dumbass urban environmentalists.

Lucky it wasn't a mountain lion.

Why not just concrete over the whole fucking lot?

Humans are fatally flawed, we have learnt to conquer nature but not live with it. If people learnt to respect nature rather than fear it or assume their safety was someone else's responsibility, incidents like this wouldn't happen or if they did, nature or some third party wouldn't be held responsible.

Funny how it's our resident leftists automatically assuming this is somehow being proposed.  Must be that deep streak of authoritarianism/totalitarianism so beloved by liberals, clouding their perception.

How about better education based on reality, instead of Ranger Rick (an American cartoon raccoon, used to push the environmentalist agenda on school____'s) and Bambi's Mother?

When I was four years old I wanted to be the Wiley Coyote when I grew up. I figured I could succeed where he couldn’t and put that fucking road runner down once and for all.

As for the whole who is encroaching on who’s turf brouhaha it is, as with most things, a matter of achieving balance. Conservation efforts are paying off but, subsequently, we shouldn’t be surprised that incidents like this are on the rise. It is all a question of the price we are willing to pay. Are we willing to accept increased wildlife populations at the expense of a few cats and dogs and the occasional child?

I agree with that fatal flaw.  We over react, build fear where we should build respect and by my estimations it's only getting worse with all the concrete castle dwellers we have.  I've had friends from the city come to visit who are shocked  by how dark  `night` actually is when there is no street lights.  Others who are amazed that Bears, Coyotes and Wild Cats live next door asking why I am not afraid.  It's sad that a sighting in suburbia creats a feeding frenzy
that will mark the next generation due to the cost of progression that's forgotten where it came from.
(no spell check this time, sorry!)

No worries, MC.  My response was inspired by the crack at the beginning of your reply.

From the rest of what you said, I took that you have an idealized view of nature, shaped by social prejudices.  Once you chose the word "conquered" to describe the relationship, I didn't see much point in potential discussion.  You speak of "existing with nature," but I think those words mean very different things to each of us.

Are there rats in those wonderful old cities where you live?  Do you take certain precautions with stray food and trash can lids?  Maybe even set a trap?  That's existence with nature.  Exactly the same sort of understanding and precautions should be applied on the edge of development.

I live up in the woods, backing onto 6,000 plus acres of preserve and state park. Back when my daughter was little, we had the porch closed in so she couldn't get out. Her little fisher price picnic table and kitchen were out there in summer. I still have vivid memories of coming out to the porch to get her and seeing a coyote maybe 50 feet away watching her.

Thankfully the mountain lions are very shy. But the bears in early spring are not.
