Wheldrake -> RE: BDSM University? (5/4/2008 12:29:32 PM)

The campus would of course be surrounded by a high stone wall, in order to conceal university activities from prying eyes. Only students, staff and faculty with valid passes would be allowed through the gates.

The university would not aspire to teach anyone how to BE a good dominant or submissive, but would simply seek to instruct students in some useful skills – both practical and psychological – that would likely be of value in their future relationships. Switches, as well as tops and bottoms with little interest in the D/S side of things, could register as off-campus students and take whatever combination of classes appealed to them. Students in this category would of course be considered full, and valuable, members of the university community.

For dominant or submissive students who preferred to live on campus, the university experience would be somewhat more involved and all-encompassing. In the shadowy opulence of the Sade Building, student dominants would  learn the dark arts of their trade from polite but confident instructors. All students in this department would take mandatory classes in anatomy, first aid, and certain aspects of human psychology, and budding pro-doms could study financial management and marketing. On an elective basis, students could learn whatever techniques of restraint and torment most appealed to them. Well-paid teaching assistants, and advanced students from the Department of Submission, would be available as practice subjects for everything from rope bondage to mummification, from flogging to CBT. The living regime in the adjoining Dominant Dormitory would stress independence and personal responsibility. Dominant students would be held to very high standards of academic achievement, but there would be no curfews, no limitations on television or internet access, no dress codes, and no restrictions on alcohol consumption. Students could party as much as they wanted and come and go from campus at will, provided they got reasonable grades.

On the other side of campus, submissive students in plain uniforms of coarse fabric would learn from firm, no-nonsense instructors in the spartan confines of the Sacher-Masoch building. There would be no attempt to train them in a detailed protocol that would be almost certain to clash with the preferences of future dominants. Instead, the emphasis would be on broadly applicable skills like cooking, massage, and household maintenance. Submissives would also get some of the same health-and-safety instruction as dominants (although in separate classes, taught in a rather different style) and would attend seminars on issues such as the distinction between dominance and abuse. Classes on sexual technique would be optional, but highly recommended. Submissives could also choose to sign up for practical sessions in which they could undergo whatever privations, sufferings and indignities they thought it would be useful to experience. In the Submissive Dormitory, the students would enjoy few luxuries, and would be subject to a strict regime of curfews, bland but nutritious meals, endless chores, and mandatory exercise sessions. Except during university holidays, they would be permitted to leave campus only under the most exceptional circumstances. Violations of the many rules would be swiftly and firmly punished.

Now and then, the submissive and dominant students would be brought together as part of their education. At first, the dominants would be limited to practicing a very specific range of activities, under the close supervision of the instructors. However, submissives who were approaching graduation would be transferred to the upper floor of the dominant dormitory, where they would fetch, carry and clean – and occasionally suffer – for equally advanced dominant students.

There are plans in the works for this sort of thing.  Far from being proscriptive, it is seen as being a supplement to reading and for those who can't attend conventions and face-to-face classes.

I am not associated with it at this time as I've retired from active presenting.

SO many in this lifestyle now that are on this site have NO clue what this lifestyle is even about.

Then, maybe you could enlighten us all, as to "what this lifestyle is even about".  Sorry, but as far as i'm concerned there isn't one universal view or meaning about Bondage & Discipline and Sadomasochism.  To me, it's a very individualized and personal experience.

If some people want to take classes on BD/SM online, that's up to them.  Personally, i wouldn't have an interest in it.  i prefer the "Hands on" method of learning, especially when it's my Master's hands on me.[;)]

There's a time and place for everything. It's called "College"

At your average university, I learned more about BDSM than I did about history, math, english, music, geogrophy, biology, economics, psychology, etc....
As a matter of fact, it was a lesbian couple who taught me the finer points of giving oral.

Your oline course sounds nice but what would anyone learn from it that's not taught here on CM and at BDSM seminars, muches, play parties, and such.

As for myself, I'm more of a hands on kind of learner. Just reading or watching doesn't help me that much. "Hands on" is the best way for me to learn what I'm doing.

This isn't a bad idea, but there will be bugs and cost issues to deal with.

Yet have a look at a different approach to this issue. A person who attends play parties or attends BDSM events, or even finding another to teach them about flogging or bondage, etc is in itself a type is class lesson. Granted it's not in a formal classroom setting but it is still an enviroment where one person is is being open and willing to impart knowledge onto others.
In this case it is a form of one wayism since that individual is being taught by another based on that teacher's own knowledge gained throughout the years. Yet countless people are willing to participate without crying twuism. My question is, what makes this so different then having a place with knowledgable people who are willing to teach new comers and learned alike? Is the adage of "take what you need and discard the rest" simple lip service?

You make some excellent points regarding the limitations of e-learning, especially when it’s poorly done. You’re absolutely right--for a hands-on skill, there’s no substitute for practicing face-to-face with a live instructor and classmates.

However, online courses (not collections of Web pages) offer advantages that can offset the loss of physical proximity:

1) They’re accessible to people who can’t go to a dungeon or educational event because of location, time, money, privacy concerns, or newbie shyness. In addition, millions of bedroom players aren’t interested in joining the public scene, just in using erotic power exchange within their personal relationships. Also consider those with physical limitations: individuals with hearing loss, impaired vision, or physical challenges who may find an online course more accessible.

2) They allow more depth and breadth of exploration than a typical live workshop does.

3) They let the instructor interact with each person in the class—something there’s rarely time to do at a workshop. People who are uncomfortable asking questions in person are more open in a format like this, and even the meekest attendee can participate equally in the discussions.  The instructor becomes a guide and mentor during the weeks the course is in session.

4) They allow people to learn topics other than the ones available locally. Ditto for presenters: people can study with a particular expert even if that expert lives halfway around the world.

5) An online classroom offers more options for using multimedia (text, photos, video, audio, web conferencing) to create engaging, interactive content. Learners can repeat a lesson or demo they didn't understand, or read a transcript of a missed class chat.

E-learning isn’t necessarily a better or worse way, it’s just another way that we didn’t have before. With the huge increase in public/media interest in BDSM--and the corresponding increase of bad information and negative role models on the Web—we’d be remiss if at least some of our kink educators didn’t leverage this technology to reach a larger audience.
